Coat of arms of the city of Aichach

The honorary citizenship is the highest honor of the Swabian district town Aichach . It can be awarded to personalities who have made outstanding contributions to the reputation and fate of the city and who have decisively influenced the development of Aichach. Since 1821 a total of 16 people and a further 11 people in the rural communities around the city that have since been incorporated have received this honor.

As in many other German cities, on May 4, 1933, the city council of Aichach filed a motion to honor high-ranking politicians of the Third Reich with honorary citizenship, without these people having any connection to the city. The request was granted. With resolution no. 45 of the Aichach city council of November 6, 1945, the names Hindenburg , Hitler , Ritter von Epp and Adolf Wagner were deleted from the list of honorary citizens.

The mayors and city council members are entitled to submit proposals. After assessment by the administrative and finance committee, the city council decides on the proposals in a closed session. A resolution requires a two-thirds majority of the members entitled to vote. Honorary citizens have the right to be invited to representative events in the city. Otherwise there are no special rights or obligations. Honorary citizens who find themselves in economic hardship through no fault of their own can be granted support by the city council or an honorary salary to avert permanent hardship. The withdrawal of civil rights or unworthy behavior leads to the withdrawal of honorary citizenship. The city council also votes on this with a two-thirds majority.
