List of airspeed records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The absolute airspeed record is the highest airspeed that can be achieved by an aircraft without a specific class. The rules of all official airspeed records are set by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI).

The absolute airspeed world record recognized by the FAI is tied to a precisely defined 16.25 km long route that has to be flown in both directions at an altitude of 12,000 m. Speed records achieved over other distances (other classes) are usually referred to as international records.

Classes

Non-absolute speed records are divided into several classes and sub-classes. There are three classes of aircraft: land planes, seaplanes, and amphibious planes . Within these classes there are also subdivisions for various weight classes and further subdivisions for piston engine, jet , turbo-prop and rocket aircraft. Either a certain route, a circuit of different lengths and loads or between certain cities such as New York and London is measured .
