List of members of the Liechtenstein Parliament (1866)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list shows the members of the Landtag of the Principality of Liechtenstein , which emerged from the Landtag elections of 1866. The electors elected by the people between March 4 and April 22, 1866 met on May 3, 1866 in the hall of the castle in Vaduz. In the session of the state parliament on October 9, 1965, a lottery was drawn to determine who had to leave the state parliament at the end of the electoral period. Since only half of the twelve MPs were re-elected every three years and in the first election at the end of 1862 all twelve places were allocated at once, this step was necessary. The three deputies appointed by the sovereign in 1862 kept their seats.

Every eligible voter elected electors in their community, who then met in Vaduz to elect the representatives there. In order to be elected to the state parliament, you needed an absolute majority of all electors in the first two ballots. If not enough members could be elected by then, a relative majority was sufficient in the third ballot. The deputies were then elected using the same procedure.

Number of electors

The election of the electors took place between March 4th and April 22nd, 1866 in the school buildings of each parish. It was compulsory to vote; non-participation was punished with a fine. All men over the age of 24 who had a job were eligible to vote, although they were not allowed to be in servitude. Excluded were those who received poor relief, were charged or found guilty in court, or were acquitted for lack of evidence. Instead, the right to vote was not linked to a voter's wealth or tax revenue, and each vote counted equally.

The number of electors that a municipality provided was based on the number of inhabitants of the municipality. For every 100 inhabitants it provided two electors, whereby the number of inhabitants was rounded to a full 100. For the state elections in 1866, the eleven municipalities provided the following electors.
