List of members of the Liechtenstein Parliament (1878)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list shows the members of the Landtag of the Principality of Liechtenstein , which emerged from the Landtag elections of 1878. The election of 1878 was the first election after the constitutional amendment that split Liechtenstein into two constituencies - Oberland and Unterland. In addition, this constitutional amendment also changed voting rights. In contrast to previous practice, people were now allowed to vote who were in a social relationship or who were acquitted by a court due to lack of evidence or who were being investigated at the time of the election. In addition, the provision was dropped that at least two-thirds of the electors had to be present so that conditions like the 1877 election could not be repeated. The election had previously been canceled because the electors of the Unterland did not want to continue in protest against the agreements made by the Oberlanders. From now on, the election, regardless of the number of electors present, began at the specified time. In addition, the term of office was now four years and no longer six, instead of each election all MPs were re-elected and not just half.

The electors elected by the people between April 16 and April 30, 1878 met on May 15, 1878 in Vaduz (WK Oberland) and on May 16 in Mauren (WK Unterland). Seven MPs were elected in the Oberland constituency and five in the Unterland constituency. In addition, on June 1, 1878, three deputies were appointed by Prince Johann II .

In order to be elected to the state parliament, an absolute majority of all electors present was required in the first two ballots. If not enough members could be elected by then, a relative majority was sufficient in the third ballot.

Number of electors

According to the Liechtenstein constitution, the state parliament was not elected directly, but by means of electors. Between April 16 and April 30, 1878, the elections took place in the parish halls of all parishes. The number of electors that a municipality provided was based on the number of inhabitants of the municipality. For every 100 inhabitants it provided two electors, whereby the number of inhabitants was rounded to a full 100. For the state elections in 1878, the eleven municipalities provided the following electors.

List of members

The electors of the Oberland constituency met on May 15, 1878 in the castle hall in Vaduz to elect the members of the parliament. The electors from Unterland met one day later, on May 16, 1878, in the Batliner Gasthaus in Mauren. Since 1877, it has been the rule that elections should always begin at the announced time, even if not all electors are present. Therefore, of the 100 electors elected from the Oberland constituency, only 96 were present, but all of the 60 Unterland electors.

In the elections in the Oberland, seven members were elected with an absolute majority in the first ballot. In the second ballot, three deputies were elected. The five MPs from Unterland were also elected in the first ballot, only the election of the two deputies required three ballots. On June 1, 1878, the sovereign confirmed the three deputies whom he had already appointed in the last election.
