List of stumbling blocks in Lehrte

The list of stumbling blocks in Lehrte contains all the stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig in Lehrte as part of the art project of the same name . They are intended to commemorate the victims of National Socialism who lived and worked in Lehrte. When it was relocated in June 2012, 21 stumbling blocks were laid. (As of June 2019)

August Bödecker was born in Otze on November 28, 1880 and has lived in Lehrte since 1882. He worked as a conductor for the Reichsbahn . He was arrested for his political activities and taken into "protective custody" on August 23, 1944 in Celle prison . On September 15, 1944, he was taken to Neuengamme concentration camp . He died there on October 10, 1944 in the infirmary.

Robert Lohmeier was born on March 18, 1910 in Dauelsen , he has lived in Lehrte since 1914. He worked as a stone setter. After his arrest, he was taken to Neuengamme concentration camp. He died on April 22, 1943 in the Farge satellite camp of the concentration camp.

Julius Katz was born in Vilnius on March 27, 1891 . He had been married to Masha Katz since 1913 and had two children. He moved with his family to Lehrte in 1919. He was arrested on November 9, 1938 and was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp until December 30, 1938 . On December 3, 1941, he was arrested again and deported to the Riga-Jungfernhof camp . In 1943 he was transferred to the Kaiserwald concentration camp and then to the Stutthof concentration camp , in 1944 to the Buchenwald concentration camp , again to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and finally to Theresienstadt. There he was liberated and after the end of the war he returned to Lehrte, where he died on December 8, 1961.

Masha Katz was born as Masha Chabas on September 1, 1895 in Vilna. She had been married to Julius Katz since 1913 and had two children. In 1917 she was conscripted in Vilna to work in the German Reich. After the First World War , she opened a shop in Lehrte in 1921, which she had to give up in 1938. On December 6, 1941, she was deported to the Riga-Jungfernhof concentration camp and then to the Kaiserwald concentration camp and the Stutthof concentration camp. She survived and was liberated, moving to Great Britain after the end of the war. She then returned to Lehrte in 1947 and opened a new shop in the village in 1948, which she ran until 1961.

Antonie Katz was born on September 13, 1915 as the daughter of Masha and Julius Katz in Vilnius. From 1919 she lived in Lehrte. She managed to escape to England in 1938.

Abraham Katz was born on January 27, 1919 as the son of Masha and Julius Katz in Lehrte and also lived in Paderborn and near Friedersdorf in the Hachschara estate Skaby. After his arrest in 1938, he was in Sachsenhausen concentration camp until December 31, 1938. After his release he was arrested again and taken back to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. There he was shot on May 28, 1942.

Eugenia Palmbaum was born as Eugenia Bernis on December 9, 1911 in Bremen . She was the second wife of Hans Palmbaum and lived in Lehrte since 1932. In November 1938 she managed to escape to the USA.

Hans Palmbaum was born on May 2, 1898 in Hildesheim. From 1924 he was a resident doctor in Lehrte and was married to Eugenia Palmbaum for the second time. In September 1938 he was able to flee to the USA. From 1946 he lived in New York, where he died in 1947.

Selma Horwitz was born Selma Katz in Sondershausen on May 2, 1866 and had lived in Lehrte with her husband Julius, who died on December 24, 1939, from at least 1891. On December 6, 1941, she was deported to the Riga-Jungfernhof concentration camp and died there on February 28, 1942. On April 21, 1949, she was declared dead by the Burgdorf District Court.

Hugo Weiler was born on November 12, 1886 in Steinbach. He had been married to Paula Weiler since 1920 and ran Karl Levin's commercial agency in Hanover from January 1935 to October 1938 . He was arrested on November 10, 1938 and was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp until December 17, 1938. On December 6, 1941, he was deported to the Riga-Jungfernhof concentration camp and died in the Auschwitz extermination camp .

Paula Weiler was born on July 22nd, 1891 as the daughter of Julius and Selma Horwitz in Lehrte. Since 1920 she was married to Hugo Weiler. On December 6, 1941, she was deported to the Riga-Jungfernhof concentration camp. She later came to the Kaiserwald concentration camp and was murdered in the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1944.

Kurt Weiler was born on August 16, 1921 as the son of Hugo and Paula Weiler in Lehrte. On November 10, 1938, he and his father were arrested and then released because he was not yet 18 years old. With a Kindertransport he managed to escape to England in January 1939 and so he survived the Holocaust as the only one in his family. In Oxford he was able to attend courses in painting and graphics at the City School of Arts and Crafts until he was interned at the beginning of the Second World War. After his release he worked as an assistant editor and director for animated film productions at Larkins & Co. In 1950 he returned to Lehrte for a short time, then moved to the GDR and started producing puppet cartoons. At DEFA he became a successful animation film director and received several awards. He was personally present to lay the stumbling blocks for him and his family in Lehrte. Kurt Weiler died on August 2, 2016 in Kleinmachnow .

Else Brumsack was born as Else Meinrath on March 26, 1891 in Osnabrück . She lived in Lehrte since 1898, briefly in 1908/1909 also in Osterode am Harz , and was married to Nathan Brumsack, who died in 1931. On December 15, 1941, she was deported from Hanover to the Riga ghetto. She died on April 7, 1943 in the Riga Kaiserwald concentration camp.

Ruth Brumsack was born on June 24, 1921 as the daughter of Nathan and Else Brumsack in Lehrte. She and her family were deported to the Riga ghetto on December 15, 1941 and survived the Holocaust. After her liberation, she returned to Lehrte in 1945 and emigrated to the USA in 1949 after her marriage.

Günther Brumsack was born on February 25, 1923 as the son of Nathan and Else Brumsack in Lehrte. He lived in Lehrte and at times on the Lehrgut in Groß Breesen . On December 15, 1941, he was deported to the Riga ghetto. He survived the ghetto and the Holocaust, but died of typhus shortly after the end of the war .

Auguste Simon was born Auguste Jacobsohn on January 9, 1859 in Großburgwedel . She was married to William Simon and had lived in Lehrte since 1895; the marriage resulted in four children. She was widowed since 1913. On July 23, 1942, she was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto , where she died on March 23, 1943.

Albert Simon was born on August 31, 1885 as the son of William and Auguste Simon in Großburgwedel. After his father's death in 1913, he took over his parents' manufactured goods business and ran it until 1938. Then he was forced to sell the business. He then moved to Hanover and fled from there to the USA.

Frank Simon was born on August 4, 1921 as the son of Albert and Irma Simon in Lehrte. After school he was in the Israelite Horticultural School in Hanover-Ahlem. In 1938 he was able to flee to the USA, where his father and brother were also.
