Over time, myths about the battles of war developed that became part of the collective memory of the nations participating in the war.

From 1900 to 1921, 200-year anniversary celebrations were held in many of the countries concerned. After the lost war against Japan , Russia's ruling elite needed powerful means to regain control of the country. The memory of past victories should give society consolation and new clues. Mention should be made of the 200-year commemoration of the Russian victory in the Battle of Lesnaya and the Battle of Poltava . While the Lesnaya event barely crossed the governorate borders of Mogilev , celebrations for the Poltava Battle took place in many cities in Russia in 1909 , but they did not develop a nationwide response. The 250th anniversary, which fell during the thaw under Khrushchev , was also celebrated with gun salutes and fireworks. Monographs , festive events, anthologies and essays rounded off the memory of the 250th anniversary celebrations in 1959.

As early as 1809, the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava was commemorated in Russia. Such anniversary celebrations also served to bring about a dominant bourgeois or official memory of the history of the war.

Collective cultural memories deal with the consistent and unified. Certain images can persist for centuries and then be subject to cultural change. Coding forms intended to record certain war experiences, for example images of war, can remain static for a long time and then change.

It is similar with the cultural reception of the descendants of the Great Northern War. A hundred years ago, the real military was a defining feature of the anniversary celebrations. Heads of state or government representatives appeared at the celebrations in fantasy or worn-out uniforms and presented themselves as military leaders. These events remained determined by protocol and did not achieve comprehensive involvement of the people. The social change also led to a change in the cultural reproduction of the war events in the north. Re-enactment has been the setting for the anniversary celebrations since the end of the 20th century . Amateur actors wear fantasy uniforms and are just as serious when they re-enact the battles of the day, often in front of a large audience. They give the descendants a realistic experience of the actions of that time as well as of the multiple deaths and suffering of people.
