Lompret ( Walloon Lompré-el-Fagne ) is a district of the Belgian town of Chimay , which in the Walloon region belonging Hainaut is. Until the municipal reorganization of Belgian municipalities in 1977 , Lompret was an independent municipality . The village is located in a beautiful valley on the banks of the Eau Blanche River . Since 1997 Lompret has been included in the list of the 24 most beautiful villages in Wallonia (" Les Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie ").
etymology
The village was first mentioned in writing as early as 1182 under the name Longo Prato , which literally means " long pasture ".
history
Found in Lompret arrowheads from flint testify as Neolithic tools ( scrapers , graver , drill ) from a time back very far-reaching settlement of the area that are suitable for Roman continued. Traces of an earlier encampment can also be found on a ledge above the village. According to a legend, the numerous wild yews growing here are said to have been planted by Roman soldiers . According to an ancient Roman belief , the yew tree was the tree of the dead .
In contrast, it is certain that human settlement will continue in the 3rd century , which was proven by the discovery of a treasure made of 600 silver coins buried in the ground .
At the time of the Ancien Régime, the glory of Lompret ( French : Seigneurie de Lompret ) was under the feudal court of Chimay and was successively part of the estates of the de Bouzanton and de Landas families . During this period a castle was even built , which unfortunately was destroyed in 1640. In 1655 the Lompret glory was sold to Pierre Jacquier. Pierre Jacquier was provost of Chimay , lord of Virelles and owner of a hut in Rance . The glory of Lompret remained in the possession of his descendants even after the French Revolution .
economy
In Lompret there was iron mining very early and several ironworks were in operation until 1831, the last even until 1870. At that time, most of the villagers turned to forestry or looked for jobs in the urban agglomerations in the area, only very few dedicated themselves of Agriculture , which is not easy here by the often uneven or muddy terrain.
The demographic development is stable thanks to the attraction exerted by the real quality of life of village life.
