Louie's Cage percussion is an Austrian percussion - Ensemble . The repertoire of the six-person group includes jazz , classical music , pop and rock music , as well as film music and electronic music .

history

The ensemble was founded in 2014 by six students from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna (formerly the Vienna Conservatory, Private University of the City of Vienna).

The name Louie's Cage Percussion pays homage to the composer John Cage and the monkey king King Louie from the Disney film " The Jungle Book ". The ensemble's first appearances were at the Odeon Theater Vienna, the Akzent Theater and the Hollabrunn Summer Theater. Since the 2017 season Louie's Cage Percussion can be heard regularly at the Volksoper Vienna , the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Munich and the Wiener Konzerthaus . In 2020 he performed at the Wiener Musikverein , on the stage in Hof St. Pölten, and in the Hugo-Wolf-Saal Leibnitz.

In May 2017, the Vienna Volksoper published a live rehearsal recording of Louie's Cage Percussion on Facebook. The recording was shared and clicked several million times, and in January 2020 the video exceeded 150 million views on Facebook. This and other videos made Louie's Cage Percussion a social media phenomenon within a very short time. Radio and television reports on Louie's Cage Percussion appeared in the ORF programs heute leben and Ö1 Klassik Treffpunkt, as well as in 2020 in the Arte program Stars von Morgen with Rolando Villazon and in the ZDF Klassik Klub. Since 2018 Louie's Cage Percussion has also been a regular guest at workshops and children's concerts in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. a. at the Beatboxx Vienna drummer camp.

In April 2020 the first album Characters was released on Preiser Records . The music video of the same name appeared on YouTube on January 27, 2020.

Music, comedy, video recordings

The repertoire of the group excluding compositions and arrangements include the members of Louie's Cage percussion and sets this addition to the traditional percussion instruments , percussion from around the world. The group's instruments are expanded to include keyboard, saxophone, guitar, bass, tuba and accordion, as well as mallet instruments that are amplified and modified by electronic effects.

The aim of the musicians is to expand the classical percussion repertoire with a cross-genre ensemble and to create performances in the form of an overall musical and dramaturgical concept.

The Austrian actress, singer and director Sigrid Hauser stages acting in and between the pieces of music and works out the dramaturgy of her programs with the musicians. The stage space is integrated into the overall concept through video feeds and lighting effects and completes the narrative on a visual level.
