Louis, the miser is a 1980 created French film comedy of Louis de Funès and Jean Girault after the comedy The Miser (1668) of Molière . Louis de Funès plays a morbid curmudgeon in it .

action

France in the 17th century. Harpagon is a curmudgeon, as it is in the book. His ultimate goal is to preserve and increase his wealth. He keeps his treasure in a box, which he buried in his courtyard and which he makes sure of at least once a day. His avarice drives many curious flowers. So he flees from the sexton in panic during the collection in the church.

His two children, daughter Elise and son Cléante, suffer badly from their father's greed. In order to save money, the father chooses old Anselme for his daughter, who is willing to forego a dowry. He doesn't know that she loves his steward Valére. An elderly and wealthy widow is planned for his son Cléante. Harpagon himself has its eye on the pretty young neighbor daughter Marianne - like his son, who disagrees with his father's marriage plans as much as his sister Elise.

When Harpagon notices at the first meeting with Marianne that she and his son confess their love by making ambiguous remarks, he becomes suspicious. After Marianne, Cléante and Elise asked the wedding broker Frosine for advice, Harpagon brought his son to live with him and claimed to give up his marriage plans and now wanted to marry Marianne to his son. When Cléante, who does not realize that his father only wants to listen to him, confesses his true feelings for Marianne, a dispute between father and son breaks out. An attempt by Maître Jacques, who is both a cook and a coachman, to settle the dispute by telling them separately that the other would now agree, fails a few seconds later.

Shortly afterwards, the servant La Fléche Cléante brings his father's money box, which he secretly stole from him. Panicking over the loss of his money, Harpagon quotes the commissioner and, in his desperation, desires the arrest of all of Paris. In order to get revenge on the unpopular Valére, Maître Jacques claims that he took the box. Harpagon then interrogates him in the presence of the inspector. Valére misunderstood the situation, however, and believes that one knows about his love for Elise, which he confesses and which makes Harpagon even angrier. When Anselme arrives, it turns out that Valére and Marianne are his children. The three were separated in a shipwreck years ago and believed the other was dead. Anselme gives Elise and Valére his blessing. Cléante offers his father to reveal the hiding place of the money if the latter agrees to his son's marriage to Marianne. Anselme promises to finance the double wedding and also to pay the entire dowry. Maître Jacques will be forgiven his false accusation.

After La Fléche has returned the box to him, Harpagon flees with it into the desert, where the sexton again pursues him with the bell bag .

In 1957 and 1961, it undertook Louis de Funes for the role of Harpagon in the play The Miser by Molière . However, he did not feel mature enough for it and refused each time. Later there were always offers that were not carried out. His two heart attacks in 1975 made the dream of a stage adaptation impossible. Since French television did not have a sufficient budget available, he accepted the offer from producer Christian Fechner , who procured the necessary funds for a cinema production.

Jean Girault, who had directed several De Funès films, and the leading actor shared the direction. De Funès “does not do without any of his usual faxes” and the material is presented with a wink. The characters sometimes speak into the camera , boards advertise Molière's play, persecutions are historically underlaid with rock music and appear in the German dubbed version, adapted to the linguistic style of comparable films from the 1970s, terms such as “broadcast pause” and “Bahnhofspenner”. In the original, however, according to de Funès' request, the text of the original was kept close.

The cinema release in France was on March 5, 1980, in Germany only three weeks later on March 27, 1980. The French original is 116 minutes long. With about 40 minutes less, this is the most heavily shortened Louis de Funès film in the German version. Commercially it fell short of expectations.

A new, unabridged German dubbed version was created in 2008. The short and long version of the film with old and new synchronization have been available on DVD since August 2010, which is included in Louis de Funès Collection 2 .
