Louis Jacoby , also Jacobi (born June 7, 1828 in Havelberg , † November 11, 1918 in Berlin ) was a German engraver .

Life

Jacoby learned copper engraving from Eduard Mandel in Berlin from 1844 and made a series of engravings, partly in cardboard and partly in line style. The first of these was the Evangelist Johannes (after Alessandro Tiarini ), which was then followed by the Battle of the Hun, as well as the saga and story, for Duncker's edition of Kaulbach's wall paintings in the Neues Museum Berlin, and Lady Macbeth, sleepwalking , for Kaulbach 's Shakespeare gallery . In 1855 he went to Paris for four years , toured Spain and lived in Rome from 1860 to 1863 .

In 1863 he became professor of copper engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and first brought a series of portrait engravings to Winterhalter , Kaulbach and his own drawings, as well as Alexander and Roxane , to Soddoma , and the cardboard boxes for the two curtains of the New Opera House in Vienna Rahl and Laufberger . He painted Raphael's School of Athens while in Rome .

In 1871 he received the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class and in 1872 became an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.

From 1892 he lived in Berlin as an artistic advisor to the Reichsdruckerei and advisor for the artistic publications of the Berlin museums, where he was responsible for the gallery work.

Jacoby's engravings include: the portraits of the Austrian imperial couple as well as Karl Freiherr von Rokitansky , Peter Ritter von Cornelius , Ernst Karl Guhl , Theodor Mommsen , Wilhelm Henzen , Franz Grillparzer , General de la Motte-Fouqué , and Ludwig Graf Yorck von Wartenburg .

Jacoby is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Havelberg .

His son Meinhard Jacoby (1873–1957) was a painter, sculptor, medalist, graphic artist and craftsman in Berlin and Mölln . He emigrated to Brazil under the pressure of the emerging National Socialism.
