Louis Raphaël I. Cardinal Sako , previously Louis Sako , (born July 4, 1948 in Zaxo , Iraq ) is the Patriarch of Babylon and head of the Chaldean Catholic Church . He was previously Archbishop of Kirkuk .

Life

Louis Sako studied in Rome and Paris , received his doctorate in the subjects patristic and religious history in Rome and graduated in Islamic studies with the licentiate from. He speaks twelve languages, including Arabic, German, English, French and Italian.

He was ordained a priest in 1974 . He was the rain of the Chaldean seminary in Baghdad .

In 2002 he was elected Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kirkuk , but the papal confirmation by Pope John Paul II took place a year later due to the Iraq war . On the occasion of the beginning of Ramadan in August 2009 Sako formulated together with other religious leaders (including representatives of Ali Sistani and Muktada al Sadr) a call for peace, reconciliation and an end to violence: “We are all brothers, sons of the same God, we must each other respect each other and work together for the good of the people and the good of our country. Iraq needs reconciliation and dialogue. "
