Lub- , Liub- or Ljub- is a word component in place names and personal names, especially in Slavic- speaking countries.

origin

The syllable Ljub- was probably derived from the Germanic liub, leub for lovely, loved . In some Slavic languages, Lyuba means love .

One of the earliest known bearers of such a name was Saint Lubinus of Chartres in the 6th century.

Over the centuries, the syllable also changed to deciduous , Leob , Leub- , loveless , and other forms.

Place names

Place names with Lub- are among the earliest name forms in the West Slavonic language area. Important early castles were Lebus , Leoben , Libušín , Lübeck .

Personal names

Names like Ljubow, Ljubomir or Ljuben are not mentioned more often until around the 19th century.
