Lucian Iulian Sânmărtean (born March 13, 1980 in Bistrița ) is a Romanian football player . He has been under contract with FC Voluntari since November 2017 .

Career

Sânmărtean's career began in 1999 with Gloria Bistrița in his hometown, when he played for the first time in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A (now League 1 ), on April 24th . After he had nine missions in the 1999/2000 season , he made the leap to a regular player in the 2000/01 season and qualified with his club for the UI Cup at the end of the season . He was able to repeat this success in the following season , but reached the third round in 2002 , where the club was subject to the Lille OSC .

At the end of the 2002/03 season Sânmărtean was able to take third place with his team and qualify for participation in the UEFA Cup . Through this success - the best placement in Gloria's history - top international teams became aware of the players. Then it took the Greek club Panathinaikos Athens under contract with which he opened in 2004 and double of championship and Cup won.

After this success Sânmărtean, who had previously played about half of the games, was hardly used. At the beginning of 2007 he finally left the club and joined the Dutch first division club FC Utrecht . There, too, he could not prevail and returned to Gloria Bistrița in August 2008. After teething problems, he fought his way back in 2009 and was given the opportunity to move to a top club again during the 2009/10 winter break when FC Vaslui signed him. With his new club he reached the 2010 Romanian Cup final . In the 2010/11 season he is an integral part of the team.

At the beginning of 2014 he moved to record champions Steaua Bucharest , where he won the championship in 2014 . In early 2015 he moved to Ittihad FC in Saudi Arabia. In summer 2016 he returned to Romania, where he joined Pandurii Târgu Jiu .

National team

Sânmărtean played three games for the Romanian national team . He made his debut on November 20, 2002 in the friendly against Croatia when coach Anghel Iordănescu sent him on the field in the 59th minute for Adrian Ilie . After two more appearances in friendly matches, his international career came to an end on August 20, 2003 with a brief appearance against the Ukraine .

After almost eight years, the new national coach Răzvan Lucescu Sânmărtean called back to his squad in late May 2011. In the qualifying match for Euro 2012 against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 3, 2011, he made his comeback.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Romanian squad . Sânmărtean came in the third group game at halftime for his only tournament appearance. The team lost and the game with 0: 1 and was eliminated from the tournament as bottom of the group.
