Ferdinand von Wolff

Ludwig Ferdinand von Wolff (born September 13, 1874 in Glogau , † April 7, 1952 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German mineralogist .

Ludwig Ferdinand von Wolff was born as the son of the future Prussian Colonel Carl Wilhelm Franz von Wolff (1836–1912) and his wife Anna Marie Freiin von Schlotheim (1842–1907). He attended schools in Metz , Koblenz and Weimar . In 1894 he began studying law at the University of Leipzig , but soon switched to natural sciences . From 1895 he studied mineralogy and geology at the University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1899. In 1899/1900 he was a scientific assistant at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, and from 1900 assistant at the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Berlin. In 1903 he received his habilitation there for mineralogy and petrography .

In 1907 Wolff took over the full professorship for mineralogy and geology at the Technical University of Danzig . From November 1914 he was a full professor for mineralogy and petrography at the University of Halle . In 1915/16 he did military service in the Landsturm , in 1916/17 he worked as a war geologist on the Western Front. In 1918 he was a founding member of the German National People's Party (DNVP), of which he belonged until it was dissolved in 1933. In 1919 he was a member of the resident army of Halle and took part in the Kapp Putsch . In 1923 he entered the Stahlhelm . In 1934 he became a member of the National Socialist People's Welfare (NSV). In 1939 Wolff retired, but in 1943 he took over the chair again as a substitute. In 1945 he took over the management of the Mineralogical Institute again and was again appointed full professor in 1946. The CDU also joined in 1945 .

He worked in the fields of crystal structure , petrology and volcanism .

From 1916 Wolff was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . He belonged to the Order of St. John , from 1912 as an honorary knight and from 1923 as a legal knight.
