The brothers Hartmann I and Ludwig III, who were descended from Count Ludwig II . both led at the same time the title "Graf von Wirtenberg", so it can be assumed that they administered the county together. Both have been documented repeatedly in the wake of King Otto IV. Of Rhenish, Swabian and Franconian palaces . It can be assumed that the brothers exercised their office in such a way that one of them stayed in their home country while the other accompanied the respective ruler on trips to the empire and to Italy. So in 1194 Ludwig took part in the conquest of Sicily by Emperor Heinrich VI. part. And Hartmann accompanied Otto IV to Rome for his imperial coronation on October 4, 1209.

After Friedrich II von Staufen came to Constance in 1212 before Otto IV , Ludwig and his brother changed sides and supported the future emperor. Both stood by Friedrich and later his son and fellow king Heinrich (VII) in important negotiations with the Empire.

On June 11, 1226 Ludwig III. last mentioned as a witness to King Henry VII. On August 13, 1226, a “Chunr. gr. v. Wirtenberg ”in the entourage of Henry VII. At this point in time, Ludwig could have died or retired in favor of a son or nephew Konrad. However, nothing is known about his death and possible descendants. In the following years only his older brother Hartmann I and his son Konrad ("comes C. filius suus") were mentioned as Counts of Württemberg.

Individual evidence

  1. There is no evidence of a marriage to a Dillinger count's daughter. The assumption is based on a relationship between Count Ulrich I, possibly descended from Ludwig, and the Counts of Dillingen . See Adolf Layer : The Counts of Dillingen.
