Ludwig Schlimbach (born September 18, 1876 in Munich ; † January 13, 1949 ) was a German seaman and ocean sailor. The Schlimbach Prize awarded by the Kiel Yacht Club until 2004 is named after him.

Life

Ludwig Schlimbach grew up in Bavaria as the son of a bank director. After graduating from Luitpold-Gymnasium , he took up the profession of seaman and received training on sailing ships . Around 1900 he went on a long voyage on the Hamburg-America Line after receiving his officer's license as an officer and later as a captain . After his internment in the United States during the First World War , he sailed as a merchant ship captain in the sea area of the West Indies on his own account until 1930 . When this was no longer possible for economic reasons, he withdrew from merchant shipping in order to devote himself to ocean sailing in the future .

In 1931 he crossed the Atlantic from Hamburg to New York one-handed non-stop . In 1935 he took part in the transatlantic regatta . With this regatta he was noticed by the public . For his nautical and sailing achievements in the solo crossing of the Atlantic, he was awarded a golden crown compass by the city of Kiel in 1937 . Later the Schlimbachallee in Kiel-Schilksee was named after him.

Schlimbach Prize

After his death, he bequeathed this crown compass to the Kieler Yacht Club with the stipulation that it was given annually as a challenge cup to the ocean-going sailor who had covered the furthest distance.

“The crown compass dedicated to me by the city of Kiel goes to the Yacht Club of Germany as the 'Schlimbach Memorial Prize' and is to be awarded annually to the yacht sailor (leader of the yacht) who did the longest route last year - always counting from the date of my death has sailed (without using the engine) in the North Sea, Atlantic, Mediterranean and beyond. Canal, Baltic Sea and river cruise do not count. "

In order to avoid a dangerous competition for new records from the point of view of the Kiel Yacht Club , the award conditions were modified several times from the beginning of the award in 1953 and later, and the award was discontinued from 2004.
