Luke Winslow-King (born March 12, 1983 in Cadillac , Michigan ) is an American singer-songwriter , guitarist and bandleader of New Orleans jazz , alternative country and blues .

Life

His father was a hobby musician and his mother a painter with a farm. The family was firmly rooted in the Baptist Church . He learned to play the guitar at a young age and at the age of 14 he had his first band, the Luke Winslow-King Blues Band . Consequently, he went to the Interlochen Center for the Arts , a high school run by a non-profit organization , to study jazz guitar as a major . He then briefly studied at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and then at the University of New Orleans in order to build up his knowledge of music theory and composition at a conservatory for classical music . One of the big changes was the theft of his band bus and all of his instruments in town, while at the age of 19 he went on a musical tour of several states with his band. In 2001 he moved to New Orleans .

His first album under his own name, Old / New Baby (2009), was recorded in the traditional Preservation Hall of New Orleans. The music magazine American Songwriter named it one of the 'Top 10' albums in 2009. In 2010, he worked as a music therapist in New York City at the Institute of Applied Human Dynamics in the Bronx and worked as a music teacher at the La Velle School for the Blind. At the same time he took classes with Grammy-winning and avant-garde composer Gene Tyranny and in the Songwriter Circle of Jack Hardy in Greenwich Village .

In November 2014, he was caught in a small town in Northern Michigan with a small amount of marijuana and locked in the local prison by the judge for three weeks. Because of a peanut allergy , he had to spend most of it in a solitary cell, without music or reading material. This hard experience of being completely thrown back on himself was, according to his own statement, the cause of his decision to dissolve his marriage and his turning away not only from cannabis but from smoking in general. On the album I'm Glad Trouble Don't Last Always (Bloodshot, 2016) he processed the topics, including the divorce, both textually and musically.

2016 went on several European tours, performed at the Rudolstadt Festival and in November in Rome , Lugano and numerous cities in Spain .

From 2013 until the divorce in October 2015 he was married to the musician and fashion designer Esther Rose. His band includes guitarist Roberto Luti, drummer Benji Bohannon, bassist Brennan Andes and keyboardist Mike Lynch. During the first six years until 2014, the singer Esther Rose was an integral part of the band.
