Márcio Miguel da Costa Fernandes (born May 18, 1983 in Portugal ) is a Cape Verdean athlete in disabled sports .

Personal background

Fernandez himself was born in Portugal , but his parents are from the Cape Verde Islands . At the age of ten, his left lower leg had to be amputated after a car accident. Fernandez works full-time as an electrician and has two children.

Athletic career

Because of his handicap, Fernandes is in classification groups T / F44 .

At the Africa Games in 2011 in the Mozambican capital Maputo , he measured himself against non-disabled athletes - as his disciplines were not offered in his classification groups at the affiliated para-athletics competitions. In the javelin throw he finished ninth and thus last place with a best distance of 46.47 meters. In March 2012, at the prestigious 6th IPC Grand Prix de Tunis and at a meeting in Paris in May he performed in various disciplines the qualification standards for the same year in the summer in London discharged Paralympic Summer Games 2012 . He became the first Cape Verdean athlete to take part in the Paralympics thanks to his achievements and not as a result of an invitation or wild card . In the sprints over 100 and over 200 meters, however, he was eliminated in the preliminary runs. 46.04 meters were only enough for a penultimate, ninth place in the javelin throw.

The following year, 2013, Fernandes saw a significant increase in performance. At the World Championships for the disabled in Lyon in July , he did not get over 100 meters beyond the prelims (which were also semifinals there); However, he threw the spear at 53.87 meters. With that he set a new African record and secured the silver medal. Between April 2014 and February 2015 he competed for the English club Bedford & County AC from Bedford . During this time he was able to increase his level again. At the para-athletics competitions of the Africa Games 2015 in Brazzaville , he again took second place in September - this time in the discus throw. Two days later he won the javelin throw and was honored with the gold medal. A few weeks later - in October of the same year - Fernandes competed at the World Championships in Doha , the capital of Qatar . First he had to deal with a disappointing tenth and last place (with two athletes without a valid attempt) in the discus throw as well as an elimination in the prerun over 100 meters. Then, however, he succeeded in throwing a javelin (F 42, F 43 and F 44 were merged) a new African record of 56.24 meters, which gave him the world title.

Fernandes failed to repeat his good performances at the Paralympic Games in September 2016 in Rio de Janeiro . With a best distance of only 51.67 meters, he only achieved ninth place. At the 2017 World Championships in London, he was also unable to place in the medal ranks and was unable to defend his title in fourth place.

Fernandes names the Canadian runner and cancer activist Terry Fox as his sporting role model .
