The Mærsk H-Class is a class of full container ships operated by the Danish shipping company Mærsk Line . The ships belong to the class of Ultra Large Container Ships .

history

The ships will be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea . Nine ships of the class were ordered on July 8, 2015 for delivery in 2017 and 2018. The contract includes the option for up to eight additional ships in the class, two of which were ordered in 2017. It was delivered in 2019. The steel cut began in October 2015, the keel laying of the first three units took place on December 10, 2015.

Incidents

On board the Maersk Honam , which was in the Arabian Sea with 7,860 containers on its way from Singapore to the Suez Canal , a fire broke out in one of the holds in front of the deckhouse on March 6, 2018, around 900  nautical miles southeast of Salala in Oman . After the fire could not be brought under control with on-board resources, 23 crew members left the ship. They were picked up by the container ship ALS Ceres , which was on its way to Singapore and arrived at the distressed party around three hours after an emergency call. At least four seamen had suffered severe injuries, and four other seamen were missing. Three of them were later found dead on board. One of the rescued seafarers died from his injuries while on board the ALS Ceres (IMO no. 9464716). Two crew members, who were in critical condition, were taken over by an Indian Navy ship , the others brought to Kochi in southern India by the ALS Ceres .

The fire spread over the deck cargo. It was initially fought by a patrol boat belonging to the Indian coast guard; later ocean tugs and suppliers took over the fire fighting. The fire that had spread across the three holds in front of the deckhouse was largely contained after about a week. The extinguishing work continued for several weeks.

The ship was towed into the Persian Gulf and reached the roadstead of Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates on April 24, 2018 . The last nests of fire were extinguished here and the ship prepared for extinguishing in Jabal Ali.

On May 27, 2018, the ship was towed into the port of Jebel Ali, where it was completely unloaded. On June 18, it became the shipyard Drydocks World towed. There the front part of the ship, which was badly damaged by the fire, was cut off and was almost 125 meters long. The rear part of the ship was brought to South Korea in February 2019 with the semi-submersible Xin Guang Hua (IMO No. 9751573) to be joined to a newly built foredeck at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard , which also built the ship . In July 2019 the ship was named Maersk Halifax . Since the repair was completed in August 2019, the ship has been back in service.

description

As with other ULCS, the deckhouse is located relatively far forward in order to be able to load the highest possible number of containers on deck in front of the deckhouse .

The ships have 21 40-foot bays on deck. Six bays are in front of the deckhouse, eleven between the deckhouse and chimney and four behind the chimney. Up to 21 containers can be loaded side by side on deck.

The holds are equipped with cell guides. The parking spaces on deck are also equipped with cell guides up to three layers on top of each other. In front of the foremost row of containers there is a breakwater to protect the cargo from overflowing water.

Mærsk Line uses the ships in regular services between the Far East and the Mediterranean .

Technical specifications

The drive of the vessels is performed by a eight-cylinder - diesel engine from MAN Diesel (type: 8G95ME-C9.5) with 54,960  kW power , built by HHI Engine & Machinery Division under license. The engine acts on a fixed propeller . The ships are equipped with two bow thrusters and two stern thrusters.

Four diesel generators from HHI Electro Electric System (type: HSJ7 801-10P) each with an output of 2,850 kW and a shaft generator from Siemens Electric Machines are available for power generation.
