Maarja Meriste-Kivi (born January 18, 1986 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian singer and bassist. From November 2003 Kivi became internationally known as the front singer and bassist of the pop-rock girl group Vanilla Ninja . She has been active as a solo artist since 2005, since December 2007 under the stage name Marya Roxx .

Career

2002–2003: Start of career and participation in Eurolaul

Kivi began her musical career with three entries in the Estonian singing competition ETV - Laulukarussell , in which she emerged as the winner in her age group in 1993, 1994 and 1998. On January 26th, 2002 she took part in Eurolaul 2002 , the Estonian qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 . With the song A Dream , she took seventh place. This is how the manager Peep Veedla became aware of them. He should put together a girl group for the record company TopTen . In the summer of 2002, Kivi became the front woman of Vanilla Ninja.

On the band's first two albums, Vanilla Ninja (2003) and Traces of Sadness (2004), she was the lead singer in almost all songs. After initial successes in her home country, she celebrated successes with the band from the end of 2003, especially in German-speaking countries.

2004–2010: solo projects

In July 2004 she left the band. The reason for her departure was a baby that she was expecting from her husband and tour manager Renée Meriste. After the birth of her daughter, Kivi started her solo career in late 2005. Together with David Brandes , the former producer of Vanilla Ninja, she recorded her debut single Could You . Her second single Shine It On followed on September 1 .

After the success did not materialize, she separated from Icezone Music . In the summer and autumn of 2007 she recorded the debut album Payback Time in Malibu / CA (USA) with Kevin "The Cave" Shirley and Paul Crook (guitar), Scott Metaxas (bass) and Brian Tichy (drums) . It was released on November 5, 2008 in Europe and on November 8 in the United States . In December 2007 she changed her stage name from “Maarja” to “Marya Roxx” because Maarja-Liis Ilus was already known as Maarja . On January 25th, 2008 the premiere of the single 21 ?! , under a new name and management, which was played for the first time on a Luxembourg radio station. Marya introduced herself to the German audience in the summer of 2009 in the opening act of the singer LaFee . On November 7th, 2009 she started her Great Britain tour, where she appeared in various clubs in the United Kingdom. In 2010 Marya Roxx gave concerts in Prague , Vienna and Switzerland as the opening act for Skindred .

Since 2011: restart

Kivi has lived in Los Angeles since 2011 . On September 11, 2011, Roxx released the single Blinded . This is her first release after EP 21 in 2008. On November 9, 2011 she released the song Tie Your Mother Down as a download single. In February 2015 the EP Land of Dreams was released.

Private

She has been married to Renee Meriste, the former manager of Vanilla Ninja, since October 2004. Their daughter was born in September 2004.
