The album

The album "Traces of Sadness" contains twelve tracks, two so-called "extended versions". The tracks “Traces of Sadness” and “Heartless” have been extended by a few minutes. There are also two music videos on the album. Musically, there are ballad-like pieces (“When the Indians Cry”) as well as heavier songs (“Metal Queen”) on the long player. “Traces of Sadness” became the second most successful album in Vanilla Ninja’s career to date. It has sold more than 110,000 times.

In the album booklet, which is made entirely in shades of blue, there are many photos of the band, but also individual photos of the Estonian women. There are also signatures from all band members. All twelve lyrics can be read in the booklet. The CD was advertised by the private broadcaster RTL II . In the booklet, the singers would like to thank Peter Weihe, Markus Wienstroer, Pit Low, Udo Arndt, Christoph Leis-Bendorff and Gary Jones, who worked on the creation of the album.

production

The album was produced by David Brandes , who was also active for Gracia Baur , Maarja Kivi (2006; Could You ; Shine It On ) and the group N-Euro, and Jane Tempest. “Traces of Sadness” was released on Brandes 'own independent label Bros Music , based in Weil am Rhein , where Brandes' recording studio Bros Music Studio is located. Domenico Labarile, Pit Löw, Christoph Leis-Bendorff and David Brandes programmed the songs on the computer. The guitars were played by Peter Weihe and Markus Wienstroer . All texts were written by Bernd Opinion , who appeared under the pseudonym "John O'Flynn".

The tracks “Tough Enough”, “Stay”, “Don't Go Too Fast” and “Heartless” were mixed by Udo Arndt , while “When the Indians Cry” was mixed by Ronald Prent in Belgium in the Galaxy Studio . Brandes composed the remaining songs together with Tempest. When the Indians Cry can still be heard on the album in the version in which Lenna Kuurmaa and Maarja Kivi sing, as Kivi only left the band after the release of the single Liar . The track was newly composed for the release of the title as a single. Here Triinu Kivilaan took over the part of Kivi. Keyboardist Katrin Siska does not take part in the singing, just like on the debut album Vanilla Ninja , which was released in 2003.

Limited edition

On November 29, 2004 a "limited edition" of the album was released. There upon Unplugged - and listen to Classical versions of their titles. When the Indians Cry is omitted , a Christmas version can be heard as "Light of Hope". And the title Wherever , sung by Piret Järvis , has been replaced by an unplugged version of the track “Blue Tattoo”, which was heard here for the first time. Furthermore, videos for the singles "Liar" and "When the Indians Cry" and a fan poster were added. The two extended versions that can be found on the standard CD are also omitted from the limited edition .

Japanese version

"Traces of Sadness" was also released on January 31, 2005 in Japan . The version published there contains the music video for "Tough Enough" and a concert video for "Liar", which was recorded in Estonia. The track list is the same as that of the original album.

According to

“The best voice of the ninjas has [...] Piret, who seems the most natural of all band members. Maarja's voice sounds a bit uncomfortable in some songs, [...] The songs on “Traces of Sadness” fit the band's image perfectly, have hit potential and sound really good. Unfortunately, the album seems very impersonal. [...] There is hardly any variety.

Only the wonderful power ballad “When the Indians Cry” stands out from the uniformity. [...] Closely followed by the really good rock / pop song "Wherever". [...] Those who are more into tougher rock numbers are probably best served with "Liar" and "Metal Queen". "

Chart manipulation allegations

In 2005, “Traces of Sadness” was one of the albums that were part of a so-called chart scandal. Producer David Brandes is said to have paid various people to buy CDs from Vanilla Ninja, Gracia Baur and Virus Incorporation in order to place them higher in the charts. Brandes responded to the allegations about two weeks later and stated that he wanted to "clear up" the matter. Brandes commented on the “hamster purchases” by saying that it was “practically part of daily business”. On April 19, 2005, David Brandes stated on the Johannes B. Kerner talk show that he had bought 2,000 CDs by his own artists. He firmly rejected the number from Media Control , according to which he is said to have purchased 31,000 CDs.
