action
The Schenk family lives an unspectacular life in a Berlin suburb. One day officials from the State Criminal Police Office and Commissioner Matthias Lehnert stand in front of the apartment and search the room of the youngest son, Jakob. According to the investigations, this is said to have joined the Islamic State in the Middle East . Research by the parents in Spain, where Jakob and his friend Sebastian are supposed to be on vacation, reveal that Jakob is not there. Together with Jakob's older brother David, Stefan and Simone Schenk begin investigating Jakob's private life. In the process, they find out that Jakob has actually traveled to the Middle East with another friend, Falk. His interest in Islam , which he has recently shown again and again, was therefore not a kind of whimsy.
Stefan and David Schenk travel to the Middle East to look for Jakob. After a long and dangerous search, a restaurant owner succeeds in sending money to Mr Hadad. Immediately afterwards Jakob is there again. You are traveling back to Germany. But the problems are only now beginning. Why does Jakob google the Internet for the address of a Jewish restaurant? Where does he usually spend his afternoons? Tensions within his family but also in the badminton team, in which Jakob does his training sessions, are increasing. Can the parents trust Jakob? Can Stefan and Simone Schenk's employers trust them? Only over time does the relationship begin to relax. Stefan's question as to whether Jacob would still pray is answered in the negative. One evening, when Stefan enters Jakob's room, he is praying on a prayer rug in the direction of Mecca .
The film deliberately leaves the question open to what extent Jakob is still under the influence of IS.
