The Irregular at Magic High School - The Girl who Summons the Stars - The Movie (2017)

Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei ( Japanese 魔法 科 高校 の 劣等 生 , dt. "The bad pupil of the magic high school"), with the English subtitle The irregular at magic high school , is a series of novels by Tsutomu Satō, which started as a web novel and then published as a light novel with illustrations by Kana Ishida by ASCII Media Works .

The work was adapted as several manga series and as an anime television series, which was also published in a German subtitled version from April 2014. In 2015 the anime series received a German dubbed version. In 2017, The Irregular at Magic High School - The Girl who Summons the Stars - The Movie was released .

A second season should be broadcast from July 2020, but was postponed to October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

action

The action takes place in a world in which it has been possible to describe magic scientifically and therefore make it technically usable. Appropriately gifted people can use a device called Casting Assistant Device (CAD) to charge it with psions - spiritual particles - by thought , which activates the intended incantation sequence , which in turn changes the eidos , ie the information or properties of the object concerned. The time of the action is the year 2095, 35 years after a 20-year Third World War that was decided by this modern magic.

In Japan, therefore, the 1st magic school was founded with the purpose of training young people who are gifted with magic. Every year, 200 students are admitted in two groups of equal size, with the first group (also called bloom , "flowers") being those who enjoy an actual education, and the second group (also called weed , "weed") serves only as a reserve to compensate for deaths in the first group.

The male protagonist is Tatsuya Shiba ( 司 波 達 也 , Shiba Tatsuya ) , who is a genius with regard to magic mainly of a theoretical nature, but was assigned to the second group due to poor practical performance in the entrance test - hence also as rettōsei , "pupil with poor performance", referred to as. In fact, his talent lies in analysis on the one hand, and in irregular magic on the other, which he can use to stop the magic of others. His younger sister Miyuki ( 司 波 深雪 , Shiba Miyuki ) is the female protagonist and is in turn considered to be the most talented magician and model student.

publication

Tsutomu Satō began writing Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei in October 2008 on the Shōsetsuka ni narō ( 小説家 に な ろ う , "Become a novelist") website, where users can publish web novels. The work was one of the most successful on this platform and reached around 50 million page impressions. He was therefore offered by the publisher ASCII Media Works to publish his novel professionally, similar to Reki Kawahara with Sword Art Online .

The books have been published by ASCII Media Works since July 10, 2011 or, after its integration into the parent company, by Kadokawa's imprint Dengeki Bunko . The illustrations are provided by Kana Ishida. According to the announcement, the series will end on September 10, 2020 with the 32nd volume. Two sequels have been announced: Zoku ・ Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei Magian Company (sequel ・ The Irregular at Magic High School Magical Company) , will tell the story of Tatsuya and the other characters after high school. Publication is scheduled to begin in autumn 2020. Shin ・ Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei Cygnus no Otome-tachi (New ・ The Irregular at Magic High School The Virgins of Cygnus) is to accompany the two high school students Arisa and Marika during their time at high school. Publication is scheduled to begin in winter 2021. There is a previous history on Tsutomu Satō's website, which has been published since July 10, 2020.

So far (as of July 2020) 31 volumes have been published:

The chapters were also summarized in four anthologies ( Tankōbon ):
