Mahamat Kamoun (born November 13, 1961 in Ndélé , Central African Republic ) was Prime Minister of the Central African Republic from August 10, 2014 to April 2, 2016 . He is non-party and was the first Muslim in this post since the country gained independence in 1960.

Life

Mahamat Kamoun comes from a regionally influential family in the Runga tribe . He studied economics in Bangui , Abidjan and Paris in the 1980s . He initially worked as a financial expert in responsible positions in the Ministry of Finance and Budget and from 2000 to 2006 as Finance Inspector, then as Director General of the Treasury under President François Bozizé, who was overthrown by the Séléka rebels in March 2013 . Later he was both an advisor to a former leader of the Séléka, Michel Djotodia , who had temporarily declared himself president in 2013, and special advisor to the interim president Catherine Samba-Panza .

In 2007 Kamoun became a member of the Board of Directors of the Development Bank of Central African States (BDEAC) for one year in order to obtain his postgraduate degree in development economics from Boston University in the United States from the end of 2007 .

On August 10, 2014, Samba-Panza appointed him by decree to succeed the resigned André Nzapayeké as Prime Minister of the current transitional government. A few days later, he introduced his 30-strong government team, twelve of whom had previously held ministerial posts.

After the signing of a peace agreement in Brazzaville in July 2014 between the Muslim-dominated Séléka rebels and the Christian-dominated anti-Balaka militias, Samba-Panza called for a government with broader political, ethnic and religious diversity and has itself the task of implementing this. Kamoun told the press there that he “wanted an inclusive government that would hold all the vital forces of the nation together”; however, the Séléka rebels distanced themselves from the new government. After the swearing-in of the new President Faustin Archange Touadera, he was replaced by Simplice Sarandji on April 2, 2016 .
