Mahmud Fauzi (also Mahmoud Fawzy ; Arabic محمود فوزي, DMG Maḥmūd Fauzī ; * September 18, 1900 in Cairo ; † June 12, 1981 ibid) was an Egyptian diplomat and politician .

Life

Fauzi studied law at the University of Cairo . From 1926 he held many positions in the diplomatic service. In 1942 he was appointed Egyptian consul general in Jerusalem . Fauzi became Egyptian representative to the United Nations in 1947 and ambassador to Great Britain in 1952 . In late 1952 he became Foreign Minister under Presidents Muhammad Nagib and Gamal Abdel Nasser .

He remained Foreign Minister until the United Arab Republic , a union between Egypt and Syria , in 1958. From then on he served as Foreign Minister of the United Arab Republic until it collapsed in 1961. Then he was again Foreign Minister of Egypt.

After Nasser's death in 1970, he was appointed Prime Minister by his successor Anwar as-Sadat . Fauzi held this office until January 1972, after which he was Vice President until he retired from politics in 1974. Fauzi was also called the "father of Egyptian diplomacy".
