Malta [ ˈmɒltə ] ( assiniboine Iyúkšą tiʾóda, Oyúwąga, Oʾíyuweǧe, Wakpá įyúkšą ) is a city in the US state of Montana , United States and the administrative seat of Phillips County .
geography
Malta is located in the north of Montana in the High Plains . South of the city are the Little Rocky Mountains, a group of Härtlingen with heights of up to 1743 meters. The Milk River serves as a source of water for Malta. It has its source in the area of Glacier National Park .
The urban area has a size of 2.75 km². In 2010 the population was 1,997.
Infrastructure
The US Highway 2 , a west-east direction Bled across the northern US Highway, linking Malta with other cities of the state of Washington to Michigan . In Malta he meets the US Highway 191 , which leads in the opposite direction to Arizona to the Mexican border .
Malta has its own train station owned by the BNSF Railway and served by the Empire Builder of the Amtrak railway company. In the 2010 financial year, an average of 9 passengers got on or off here every day.
Attractions
There are two stations on the Montana Dinosaur Trail in Malta.
- Great Plains Dinosaur Museum: The Brachylophosaurus Leonardo, discovered north of Malta in 2000, is on display here. It is the best preserved dinosaur of all time according to the Guinness Book of Records . He is only one of four mummified dinosaurs found so far . Leonardo lived 77 million years ago. In addition, fossils of fish , invertebrates , plants and other dinosaurs such as Triceratops , Stegosaurus , Hadrosaurus and specimens of the sauropods and Dromaeosauridae are shown.
- Phillips County Museum: The Brachylophosaurus skeleton exhibited here is 10 meters long. A skull of the Tyrannosaurus Rex and a skeleton of its relative, the Albertosaurus , are also on display.

history
After the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway was built across Montana in 1887 , Malta developed from what was then siding 54. In 1890 a post office was established in Malta. The place supposedly got its name when a Great Northern Railway employee turned a globe and paused his finger over the state of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea .
The outlaw Sundance Kid , along with Harry Bass and Bill Madden, robbed a train near Malta in 1892. He was a member of the crime group The Wild Bunch , led by Butch Cassidy . On July 3, 1901, another member of the gang, Harvey Logan, known as Kid Curry, robbed a train near Malta. He looted $ 40,000.
