Mamakating is a town in Sullivan County , New York , United States . At the 2010 census , Mamakating had 12,085 residents. It is located in the southeastern part of the county.

history

The Town of Mamakating was established on March 7, 1788 as the first administrative unit within the later Sullivan County. The first county seat was located in 1833 incorporated village of Bloomingburg . According to the historical record, Johanis Hardenburgh of Kingston acquired a large piece of land that comprised what is now Sullivan County, but was then part of Ulster County.

In the first half of the 18th century, a number of forts were built on the Old Mine Road (today's US Highway 209 ) to protect the white settlers from hostile Indians . Fort Westbrookville was built in 1750 on what is now the border between Sullivan and Orange County, and in 1757 a fort was built north of Wurtsboro, which was named Fort Devans. Another fort was built in 1731 on the eastern flank of Bloomingburgh Mountain. This was called Fort Roosa. It still stands and is believed to be the oldest existing structure in Sullivan County. Most of the settlers who followed the road from Kingston settled here because the land seemed fertile to them; Game and fish as well as wood for building were in abundance.

Mamakating was later reduced to its present size as Deerpark was removed from this area in 1788 , Lumberland in 1798 , Thompson in 1803 and part of Forestburgh in 1837 .

The first school in Sullivan County was built in Bloomingburgh in 1788. Bloomingburgh Reformed Church was built in 1820 and Phillipsport United Methodist Church in 1823. Two brothers began building the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1825, which would bring coal from Pennsylvania to New York City . The first loaded coal ships arrived on the Hudson River in November 1828. On the way back to the cabbage yards, they brought with them the goods that were needed in Sullivan County. The construction of the canal thus contributed to the prosperity of Mamakating and Sullivan Counties. The railway was built in 1899 and marked the end of canal shipping.

In the middle of the 19th century, a large part of the city lived from processing leather ; In 1850, five hydropower and workhorse powered tanneries were processing 27,000 hides.

The historical society Mamakatings renovated the old school building in Summitville and maintains an archive for documents and historical finds from the city area.

The city stretches to the east to the border with Orange County and to the north to Ulster County . US Highway 209 runs through the city in a north-south direction, New York State Route 17 (future Interstate 86 ) crosses in an east-west direction.
