Manfred Rump (born January 14, 1941 ) is a former German soccer player in the GDR .

Player career

The defender Rump made his debut in the 1961/62 season for SC Empor Rostock in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR football association , which has 39 game days this season due to the change in the schedule from the calendar year to the summer-spring rhythm within 18 months. In the last third of the season, Rump played all twelve games for SC Empor as a right defender, who finally took second place in the final table after losing the decisive game against leaders Vorwärts Berlin on the last matchday with 1: 3. His first league game was the encounter on March 4, 1962 Turbine Erfurt - Empor Rostock (2-1).

The 1962/63 season , in which Rump was still not one of Rostock's regulars with ten league appearances, was now played out with 26 games within twelve months and ended with Rostock winning the runner-up again. In 1963/64 Rump was involved in the third Rostock vice championship in a row, which contributed significantly to the reputation of SC Empor as "eternal second", with only seven appearances. From 1964/65 Rump, who now played as a central defender, was able to establish himself as a regular in the team and completed 23 of 26 point games, where he also scored his only goal in the league on the sixth day of play. On September 9, 1964, Rump played an international match with the GDR youth national team. In the game between Hungary and GDR (1: 1) he was the central defender in the team. The SC Empor achieved this season, however, only a disappointing fifth place in the league after the successes of previous years and was not able to build on these successes in the following season 1965/66 , in which Rump contributed to fourth place in the final table with 16 appearances. In December 1965, the soccer section of the SC Empor was separated from the club and now joined the Hansa Rostock soccer club .

In the 1966/67 season , the FC Hansa played only to stay in the league and finally took tenth place in the final rankings, with Rump in every encounter on the field and counted among the pillars of the Rostock team. In the FDGB Cup 1966/67 , however, Hansa played more successfully and reached the final against Motor Zwickau . In this, however, Rostock and Rump were defeated as in three previous finals and with the meanwhile fourth runner-up championship in the 1967/68 season again confirmed the reputation of "eternal second". For Rump, the 1967/68 season meant a step backwards, as he was only used in 16 major league games. In the following season 1968/69 he disappeared with only three league appearances almost entirely from the Rostock squad. In the 1968/69 trade fair cup achieved by the runner-up in 1967/68 , the forerunner of the later UEFA Cup , Rump came in the second round against Fiorentina for his first two appearances in the European Cup.

1969/70 Rump came to another 15 games for Rostock in the league and two more appearances in the trade fair cup 1969/70 against Inter Milan . With the twelfth place in the final table this season, Rostock only narrowly escaped relegation to the second-class league . In the 1970/71 , 1971/72 and 1972/73 seasons , Rump was back with a total of 64 missions to the top performers of the former top team, which now ranked permanently in the lower half of the table. After the end of the 1972/73 season, Rump ended his league career, most recently playing Libero , after a total of 192 league appearances (one goal), 29 games in the FDGB Cup (one goal) and four games in the international trade fair cup. Then he helped out in the GDR league games of the 2nd team of FC Hansa and took over the training of the children's team.
