history

In 1808 James Hedges, Jacob Newman and Joseph Larwill founded a settlement. The residents named the place Mansfield after Jared Mansfield. The place grew slowly and in 1817 only had 20 houses and one shop. By 1846 Mansfield already had 23 shops, seven churches, two newspaper offices and 2,330 residents. This rapid population growth is at least partly due to the completion of the rail link between Mansfield and Sandusky ( Mansfield and Sandusky Railroad due) this year. Other railway lines were added later.

Mansfield grew explosively in the second half of the 19th century. At the census in 1880 there were 9,859 people in the city, in 1890 there were already 13,473. Four railway lines ran through the city in 1888, which had become an important industrial and commercial center in northern central Ohio. Mansfield's largest employer, along with metalworking companies, was the Hautzenroeder & Company cigar factory , which in 1888 alone had 285 employees from the city. That year Hautzenroeder also set up an outpost for convicts at the Ohio State Reformatory , the Mansfield prison. The prison was also the setting for the films Tango and Cash and The Condemned .
