Marcell Salzer , actually Moritz Salzmann (born March 27, 1873 in Sankt Johann an der March , † March 17, 1930 in Berlin ) was an Austro-German lecturer.

Life

Salzer came to Vienna as a teenager and completed a commercial apprenticeship there. After graduating, he also worked in this profession for some time. During this time he began to perform - mostly with family and friends.

When Salzer found out in 1901 that the writer Ernst von Wolhaben wanted to found a cabaret in Berlin , he resigned from his position and joined it. Salzer performed there regularly until Wolzzen's cabaret Überbrettl closed at the end of 1902. The Mecklenburg-Strelitz Grand Duke appointed him the holder of the Order for Art and Science . In 1904 he was on the stage in the Berlin Varieté Wintergarten  ; in Vienna he appeared in the Apollo Theater .

Salzer made the presentation of literary texts an independent artistic profession in the position between the drama stage and cabaret.

Salzer converted from the Jewish to the Protestant faith. He was married in Berlin and had four children. He died ten days before his 57th birthday in Berlin and found his final resting place there. An obituary appeared in the Berliner Tageblatt .

reception

Salzer's trademark was his strikingly pointed manner of speaking and his inimitable way of reading texts in a wide variety of German dialects. He was able to achieve great success with his programs “Willis Career” and “Experiences of a Bohemian Tourist Guide”.

Salzer is mentioned several times in Karl Kraus ' world war drama The Last Days of Mankind :

"1. Schieber: You, yesterday I was with the artist Marcel Salzer in the Apollo. I tell you, gentlemen, you really shouldn't miss this. 2nd slider: Soo good? 1st slider: Yes! You, he's reading you a poem. So, before the battle of Tannenberg comes General Hindenburg driving the Russians into the Masurian swamps - you read the gripping description in the press at the time - 2nd slider: I still remember the title: 'The Russian troops are surrounded by the German army and throwing it into the Masurian swamps. «1. Schieber: Yes, that happens exactly, but more funny, and there he makes gluck-gluck and gluck-gluck, how they all suffocate the soldiers. I'll tell you, with that astonished face, what he's doing, Salzer, the little eyes - it's worth the money. "

His five-volume text collection The Funny Salzer Book , which not only collected works from the German classics, but also those by Wilhelm Busch , Ludwig Thoma , Rideamus and Roda Roda , achieved the highest editions in Germany.
