The Marcillac wine-growing region is located in the northeast of the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in southwest France, about 20 km northeast of the city of Rodez . On April 2, 1990 , the former VDQS was classified as an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short). The vineyards cover around 150 hectares and are located within the 11 municipalities of Marcillac-Vallon , Balsac , Clairvaux-d'Aveyron , Goutrens , Mouret , Nauviale , Pruines , Salles-la-Source , Saint-Cyprien-sur-Dourdou , Saint- Christophe-Vallon and Valady (all located in the Aveyron department ). They were probably built in Roman times and subsequently benefited from the presence of the Conques monastery .

The vineyards are located on steep slopes up to a height of 400  m . Due to the geography of the area, the microclimate is characterized by a mixture of Mediterranean, Atlantic and continental influences.

The red wine with a minimum alcohol content of 10 percent by volume is blended from the autochthonous grape variety Fer Servadou , which is called Mansoi here (at least 90%) and the secondary varieties Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot . The harvest is limited to 50 hectoliters / hectare.

The Fer grape variety has strong tannins , which is why these wines are also suitable for aging in barrels . Many winemakers reject this, however, as the typicality is lost. The wines have a beautiful fruit that is reminiscent of currants and raspberries and this with a solid tannin structure . They reach maturity after three to five years.

A rosé is also produced in small quantities from the same grape varieties. The rosé wine should be enjoyed young.

climate

The climate of the Marcillac wine-growing region is determined by continental influences in winter and Mediterranean influences in summer. Despite the southern location, the mean annual temperature is comparatively low. The annual sunshine duration of almost 2200 hours, however, is high.

The following data comes from the weather station in the nearby town of Rodez:
