Marco Mumenthaler

Marco Mumenthaler (born July 23, 1925 in Bern ; † January 30, 2016 ; resident in Langenthal ) was a Swiss neurologist , professor and rector of the University of Bern, as well as a specialist author .

Life

Mumenthaler grew up as the son of Swiss abroad in Milan , where he passed the high school diploma. He then studied medicine at the Universities of Zurich , Paris , Amsterdam and Basel and graduated in 1950 with the state examination in Basel ; in the same year he received his doctorate with Gian Töndury in Zurich . He trained as a specialist in neurology at the universities of Paris and Zurich . In 1960 he completed his habilitation in neurology with Fritz Lüthy at the University of Zurich . He worked as a senior physician at the Neurological University Clinic in Zurich and head of the research department at this clinic. 1961/1962 he was a visiting associate at the National Institutes of Health .

In 1962 Mumenthaler became director of the Neurological University Clinic in Bern and a full-time associate professor at the University of Bern . In 1966 he was promoted to full professor . In autumn 1990 Mumenthaler retired. From 1989 to 1991 he was rector of the University of Bern for two years . He then settled down as a specialist neurologist in Zurich and continued to work in university teaching and training for doctors. In 2012 he gave up these activities.

Mumenthaler's main teaching and research area was peripheral nerve and muscle diseases. He has published 370 papers in scientific journals, 39 publications in non-medical journals, and 87 monographs. There are also book chapters and translations as well as audiovisual productions. A neurology textbook was published in thirteen German-language editions and eleven translations. A textbook on the disease of peripheral nerves in nine German-language and four foreign editions, a neurological differential diagnosis in six German-language editions and in seven translations.
