Maria Amalie Anna Josephina Antonia Justina Augusta Xaveria Aloysia Johanna Nepomucena Magdalena Walpurgis Katharina von Sachsen (born September 26, 1757 in Dresden , † April 20, 1831 in Neuburg an der Donau ) was a Saxon princess from the Albertine line of the Wettins and duchess by marriage from Pfalz-Zweibrücken . Maria Amalie was abbess of the St. Anna women's monastery in Munich .

Life

Maria Amalie was the sixth child and the eldest daughter of Elector Friedrich Christian (1722–1763) of Saxony from his marriage to Maria Antonia of Bavaria (1724–1780), daughter of Emperor Charles VII. Her brothers were the Saxon kings Friedrich August I. and Anton . She was also a cousin of King Louis XVI. of France and Charles IV of Spain and of Empress Maria Ludovica .

Maria Amalie married on February 12, 1774 in Dresden, Count Palatine Karl II. August von Birkenfeld-Bischweiler (1746–1795). Maria Amalie's brother Friedrich August had married a sister of the groom as early as 1769 . After the marriage, the couple resided at Neuburg Castle and a year later Karl August became Duke of Pfalz-Zweibrücken after the death of his uncle in 1775 and was actually intended as heir to the throne in Bavaria.

Marie Amalie was Grand Master of the Order of St. Elizabeth and, after the death of her husband in 1798, became abbess of the St. Anna Monastery in Munich, whose statutes were changed several times during her term of office by her brother-in-law, the Elector and King Maximilian Joseph . Maria Amalie is buried in the Hofkirche in Neuburg an der Donau. Their extensive library was auctioned in 1834 in Neuburg an der Donau.
