biography

family

Maria Anna was born in the royal palace in Naples. Her father Ferdinand (1751-1825), who ruled from 1759 to 1806 as King of Naples, from 1759 to 1815 as King of Sicily and from 1816 as King of the Two Sicilies, was the third son or ninth child of Charles III. of Spain (1716–1788) and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony (1724–1760). Her mother Maria Karolina of Austria (1752–1814) was the tenth daughter or thirteenth child of Empress Maria Theresia of Austria (1717–1780) and her husband, Emperor Franz I (1708–1765). Her older siblings were Maria Theresia (1772–1807), Maria Luisa Ana (1773–1802) and Carlo (1775–1778), Duke of Calabria, who was only ten months older.

death

Because Maria Anna was born only ten months after her brother Carlo, the birth was extremely difficult for both mother and child. The princess was a very frail and weak child from birth. Therefore, in 1778 her older brother Carlo, who had smallpox, had to move to the Palace of Caserta . Despite this precautionary measure, Maria Anna became infected and died after a year-long course of the disease on the morning of February 22, 1780. She was buried in the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Naples.
