Jason "JCarver" Somerville (born April 15, 1987 on Long Island , New York ) is an American poker player .

Somerville has at poker live tournaments over 3.5 million US dollars earned. He won a bracelet at the World Series of Poker in 2011 . He is the founder and producer of the video and live stream series Run It Up , in which he pursued the goal of turning $ 50 into $ 10,000 through various types of online poker. He previously produced educational content for the poker training site PokerVT and was on the list of "Ones to Watch" for the World Poker Tour in season 11 . Somerville is one of the few professional poker players who openly admit their homosexuality .

career

Somerville first saw the World Poker Tour (WPT) on television in 2004 . Shortly afterwards, he began studying the game more closely via the Internet and playing it with friends. Since his parents would not allow him to invest money in a poker site, a year before graduating from high school, he played freeroll tournaments in order to play regular online poker for real money. In this way, Somerville managed to amass a six-figure sum of money on his user account without ever depositing any additional money. He started playing live poker tournaments at the age of 18. Since the age of 21, he took part, along with other major tournaments, annually in a selection of World Series of Poker events at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas , where he became increasingly famous. In 2012 Somerville was named one of the "Ones to Watch" by the World Poker Tour . A year later he signed a sponsorship deal with the online poker platform UltimatePoker . From February 2015 to January 2020, Somerville was part of Team PokerStars under the nickname jcarverpoker . By the end of 2018, he managed to earn almost 4 million euros.

Online poker

Somerville completed more than 250 noteworthy online tournaments on the paid-for seats by 2011 and earned more than 2.2 million US dollars. In 2009, he managed to win more than $ 35,140 by finishing twentieth in a Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) event. He was also able to win a total of more than US $ 20,000 in five events of the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) in the same year . In 2010 he won his first SCOOP event and was able to finish five more events in the tournament series in the money. He reached the final table once and won almost $ 450,000 in prize money.

In April 2011, some online poker sites in the United States were banned . Somerville played very little online poker after that day until 2013 when Ultimate Poker asked for another legal option for online poker.

In September 2012 Somerville managed to win money in six WCOOP events. He reached the final table twice and won a total of $ 31,453.

On May 31, 2013, Somerville, Jonathan Little and William Reynolds joined the team at Ultimate Poker . Together with the only member Antonio Esfandiari until then , they formed the site's first professional poker team.

World Series of Poker

Somerville first took part in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in 2008 . He was able to complete three no-limit Hold'em events in the money and won over $ 15,000. The following year he won a total of more than $ 310,000 in three tournaments and reached two final tables . In 2010 he managed to complete four tournaments in the money. These included two closings at the final table and his first successful WSOP main event . In 2011 Somerville managed to win his first bracelet . For this he had to prevail in a tournament against 3,175 other players. He also won around $ 525,000 in another no-limit hold'em event. In the WSOP 2012 he was able to reach the prize money in three no-limit hold'em events and won a total of almost 125,000 US dollars. Among them was his best run so far in the WSOP Main Event , where he finished 69th. That same summer, he finished third in a qualifier for the Big One for One Drop , which earned him a ticket to participate in that tournament.

Other notable results

In 2009 Somerville managed to finish 19th in a € 10,000 EPT event , winning nearly $ 70,000. In October of the same year, he was able to reach 73rd place in the EPT Main Event , in London, winning nearly $ 15,000. In January of the following year, he finished an event of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventures in 4th place and received prize money of more than 80,000 US dollars. In 2012, he reached the final table of a WPT event. He finished the tournament in sixth place and won over $ 200,000. In June 2014, Somerville won more than $ 1.3 million in prize money through a deal for the last four remaining players in the 100k High Roller at the Bellagio Hotel .

Somerville created his first strategy videos for the poker training site PokerVT in 2011.

Somerville started his first YouTube series, Eating Cake , on December 2, 2011. It contained a total of 30 episodes and ended with the last episode on February 13, 2012. After Russell Thomas played his way to the final table of the WSOP main event in July 2012 he contacted Somerville to prepare him for the final table to be played on October 28, 2012. This preparatory work was documented in a 6 episode video series called The Final Table .

Since August 2013, Somerville has regularly posted videos of a video series called Storytime: Life and Times of J. Carver , in which he recounted his poker career. For example, he talked about the origin of his nickname JCarver . The series consisted of 6 parts, in which he also announced his interest in the future creation of video material.

On April 14, 2014, PokerNews announced that Somerville would be co-hosting the World Series of Poker site's podcast , which is also available on YouTube .

Run it up

Since the beginning of 2014 Somerville has been focusing on its Run-It-Up live stream on Twitch , where he can be watched live while playing. The third season of the series started on March 1, 2015 and lasted 70 days, during which it could be watched online daily.

Personal

Somerville was born and raised on Long Island . While signed to Ultimate Poker in 2013 and 2014 , he lived in Las Vegas . In early 2015 he moved to Toronto to play on the poker site PokerStars , which is not available in the United States .

On Valentine's Day in 2012, Somerville made his homosexuality public through a blog post. This makes him the only male, publicly gay high-stakes poker player currently. Since coming out , Somerville has received support from both within the poker community and other media outside of the poker world.
