occupation

Marie Krøyer is a historical film from 2012 that was directed by Bille August . The focus of the plot is Marie Krøyer , who tries to live up to her various roles as a painter, wife and mother. Ultimately, she understands that she has to go her own way, because what counts is what you are in your own eyes and you can't make someone happy if you are not yourself. The film is based on the biography Ballads om Marie by Anastassia Arnold .

action

In the public eye, the painter PS Krøyer , known as Søren, is a man who has it all: wealth, fame, a beautiful, considerably younger woman named Marie and a well-behaved daughter named Vibeke. What these eyes do not see are the delusions he suffers from and with which he repeatedly bullies his family. Then there is his sexual impotence. One night he goes so far as to choke Marie. She turns to a trusted lawyer and has her husband assigned to an institution. Shortly after his release, however, Søren began harassing Vibeke again. She is supposed to behave like a hunting dog and retrieve a bird he has shot during company. Marie and Vibeke then travel to Sweden to meet a friend. There Marie meets the composer Hugo Alfvén and the two start an affair. Vibeke calls him Papa Hugo.

Returning to Denmark, Marie confesses her relationship with her husband. They quarrel but don't want to part. Instead, Hugo should move closer to her. This triangular relationship means that the painter wants to force his daughter with a loaded gun to choose between himself and Hugo. Marie is now going to the lawyer, but not to get a divorce, as in this case she should be denied custody. She gives the lawyer a power of attorney out of fear that Søren can do whatever he wants with Vibeke and moves to Sweden with Hugo. Vibeke leaves them in the care of the childless housekeeper.

They seem to be doing well in the wasteland of Sweden, but when Marie becomes pregnant and wants to marry Hugo, he informs her that he is already engaged and does not intend to marry her. So Marie returns to Denmark and meets with Søren, who guarantees her financial support. She gives birth to a girl. Shortly afterwards Alfvén comes to her and asks her forgiveness. He did not marry the other woman and would wait for her and the two children in Sweden because he could not live without her.

Meanwhile, Søren's illness has worsened. Almost blind he dies alone in his bed. On the day of his funeral, it rains so heavily that the coffin is difficult to sink into the water-filled pit. Then Vibeke is again faced with an existential choice. Taking advantage of his power of attorney, the lawyer asks her whether she would rather live with the housekeeper or her mother in the future. Vibeke opts for the former, but waves to his mother when she takes the train to Sweden.

production

After Pelle, the Conqueror , it is the second film that Bille August made in Denmark. As a reason for the return August named the great current world interest in Scandinavia.

The character Hugo Alfvén speaks Swedish in the film, which was subtitled in Danish.

For reasons of cost, Marie Krøyer and Hugo Alfvén begin their relationship in Marstrand in Sweden and not, as historically correct, in Taormina in Sicily. However, Skagen was the main location because they wanted to use the special light there.

Reviews

Politiken's Kim Skotte judged that August and Brüel had managed to capture the light of Skagen , but the film had other problems. The figure of Marie Krøyer floats a little in the air, and her former social controversy would not be shown. Although Marie is the main character, her husband is the epicenter in the drama. In addition, Søren Sætter-Lassen's game overshadowed that of Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Sverrir Gudnason . So it comes to “a slanting position, which means that Marie Krøyer remains a well-made historical film, but which lacks the fire of passion and tragedy that makes it a great, tragic love story and the definitive story about the Skagen - Painter could have done. Instead it is now a film about Skagen's crooked love triangle. ”( “ En skævhed, som gør, at 'Marie Krøyer' forbliver en veltillavet historisk film uden det bål af passion og tragedie, som kunne have gjort den til en stor, tragisk kærlighedshistorie og en definitely fortælling om Skagensmalerne. Nu bliver det i stedet film om Skagens skæve trekant. " )

Per Juul Carlsen from P1 misses a narrative focus in the film. Filming the lives of celebrities alone does not make a story. He says that if the story had been about everyday people, the filmmakers would at least have been forced to give the film a punch line. He also complains that the character Marie Krøyer could not be brought to life, although the actress had made every effort. In his opinion, Søren Sætter-Lassen thundered through the role in a theatrical manner, but sparkled with life. Ultimately, it almost seems as if August had missed the developments in Danish film in the last 25 years, the film was "landscape pretty" ( "landskabsmalerismuk" ).

Prizes and awards (selection)

The film and its crew were nominated at the Robert Awards 2013 in the six categories of Male Leading Role of the Year , Female Leading Role of the Year , Cameraman of the Year , Production Designer of the Year , Costume Designer of the Year and Makeup Artist of the Year , but won none. In the same year, supporting actor Tommy Kenter won the Bodil .
