Marie Wittich (born May 27, 1868 in Gießen ; † August 4, 1931 in Dresden ; married Marie Faul , also Marie Wittich-Faul ) was a German singer with a soprano voice .

Life

The merchant's daughter Marie Wittich enjoyed singing training in Würzburg , where she was able to live with relatives after her confirmation . She made her debut in Magdeburg in 1882 and became an excellent soprano. From 1901 to 1909 she performed regularly at the Bayreuth Festival , where she in the operas of Richard Wagner , the Sieglinde that Kundry and Isolde sang. In 1889 she initially received a guest engagement at the Dresden Court Opera as a substitute for the temporarily ill prima donna Therese Malten (1855-1930) and was permanently employed in the same year.

In 1893 Wittich was awarded the title of (royal Saxon) chamber singer . The music critic Ernst Roeder emphasized in his appreciation of the musical achievements of Marie Wittich in 1896 that it has "meanwhile proven itself brilliantly". In the years that followed, Wittich gained lasting recognition, especially in the role of Salome . In the opera of the same name by Richard Strauss , premiered on December 9, 1905 in the Dresden Court Opera, the bassist Ernst Wachter played and sang the figure of a Cappadocian under the conductor Ernst von Schuch .

Other domestic and foreign theaters at which Wittich appeared as a guest were the Prague State Opera , the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels (1907) and the National Theater in Munich . In 1914 Wittich said goodbye to the stage with a performance of Tristan and Isolde and worked as a singing teacher.

Wittich was married to the city councilor (retired) Karl Faul , with whom she lived in Dresden-Johannstadt, in the house at Comeniusstrasse 63 . After her husband, she died in the summer of 1931 at the age of 63. In the obituary of the German Stage Yearbook in 1932 , Marie Wittich was honored as a “celebrated Wagner singer” as a guest at the Bayreuth Festival, whose “voice combined strength and sonic beauty in a rare way”.
