Maria von Sachsen-Weimar, abbess of Quedlinburg

Maria von Sachsen-Weimar (* October 7, 1571 in Weimar ; † March 7, 1610 in Halle ) was abbess of the empire-direct and free-worldly monastery Quedlinburg .

Life

Maria was a daughter of Duke Johann Wilhelm I of Saxe-Weimar (1530–1573) and his wife Countess Palatine Dorothea Susanne (1544–1592), daughter of Elector Friedrich III. from the Palatinate .

At the time of the death of her predecessor Abbess Anna III. , the provostess of the monastery had also died of the plague . Guardian of the canons of Quedlinburg (the elector of Saxony) was still Friedrich Wilhelm I of Saxe-Weimar in 1601 , who proposed his sister as abbess, who was also immediately elected.

On July 2nd, 1601 Maria was confirmed as abbess by Emperor Rudolf II . Her term in office was calm. She was very compliant with the patron, which led to a reduction in the rights of the monastery. Maria ensured the election of Anna Margarethe von Braunschweig (1567–1643) as provess. She was elected coadjutor in 1593 , but the election was not confirmed by the canon. The abbess got rid of the bell bag in the churches.

On a trip to Dresden , she surprisingly died at the age of 38 in Halle. She was buried in the collegiate church of Quedlinburg .
