Adelheid IV of Sommerschenburg
Adelheid IV. , Born as Adelheid von Sommerschenburg (* around 1130 - † May 1, 1184 in Quedlinburg ) was Abbess von Gandersheim from 1152/53 and from 1160/61 additionally as Adelheid III. Abbess of the women's monastery in Quedlinburg.
Life
Adelheid was born as the daughter of the Saxon Count Palatine Friedrich II of Sommerschenburg and his wife Luitgard, née von Stade. Her brother was Adalbert († 1179), the last count palatine from this family. After cancellation of parental marriage (due to close relationship) in 1144 she was raised by her grandmother the Countess Richardis Stade, born of Sponheim -Freckleben, into the custody of the holy Hildegard of Bingen in the Disibodenberg given. Together with this she went in 1151 to the newly founded Rupertsberg monastery on the Rupertsberg near Bingen .
With Hildegard von Bingen's approval, Adelheid was elected abbess of Gandersheim in 1152 or 1153 and the benediction was granted by Bishop Bernhard von Paderborn . This appointment took place after her father Friedrich II. Had been appointed by King Friedrich I, Barbarossa, as high bailiff of the imperial monastery of Gandersheim . In 1160/61 she was also given the abbatiat for the monastery in Quedlinburg. From then on she spent most of her time there. The monastery in Gandersheim, which had already burned down three times, had it rebuilt in 1168 and consecrated the local church there. Until 1167 she was still in correspondence with Hildegard von Bingen. The seals and coins of Adelheid, who found her final resting place in Quedlinburg in 1184, have also been preserved.
