Sophie Albertine of Sweden
Sophie Albertine of Sweden (born October 8, 1753 in Stockholm ; † March 17, 1829 there ) was a Swedish princess and from 1787 to 1803 the last abbess of the imperial and free-worldly monastery of Quedlinburg .
Life
Sophie Albertine was born as the daughter of King Adolf Friedrich of Sweden (1710–1771) and his wife Princess Luise Ulrike of Prussia (1720–1782). Your brother Gustav III. von Sweden thought of marriage projects with Duke Wilhelm von Oldenburg and King Stanislaus II of Poland; but none led to a result.
In 1767 she was elected coadjutor in Quedlinburg by the chapter and thus appointed the successor to her aunt Anna Amalia , who died in 1787. Sophie Albertine was solemnly introduced as abbess of the Quedlinburg monastery on October 15, 1787. From 1790 the abbess stayed in Sweden more often than in her monastery.
Sophie Albertine carried out some reforms in religion and the school system, reorganized the poor and raised the salaries of the clergy. In the rooms of the abbey she founded a small court theater, the first theater in Quedlinburg. Their commitment in the social area was shown in the establishment of "warming rooms" in which children from the poorest classes received an education.
In 1803 the Quedlinburg Abbey was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. However, the abbess and canons were guaranteed their income and previous rights until the end of their lives. Sophie Albertine returned to Sweden in September 1803. She was treated with respect by the new Swedish royal dynasty Bernadotte as the "last of the Wasa family " at court and was very close to the crown prince couple.
The ship Prinsessan Sophia Albertina was named after her.
