history

Augustinian hermits founded the Marienthal monastery east of Brunia near Beylar in 1256 , which they dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. After a short time, the name "Beylar" was replaced by "Marienthal". It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the place developed into a farming village that was able to support itself. During the Second World War, an aircraft belonging to the German Wehrmacht crashed near Marienthal. On January 1, 1975, Marienthal became part of the municipality of Brünen in the course of the second reorganization program to become part of the municipality of Hamminkeln, which was elevated to a town in 1995.

Local supply

Marienthal no longer has a grocery store. Nevertheless, there are numerous farms in the area that market their products themselves.

Sights and culture

The cultural center of Marienthal is the 14th century church with the monastery buildings and the artfully designed adjoining cemetery. These places acquired special art-historical importance through the work of artists of the Rhenish Expressionism , who came to the monastery in the 1920s to 1940s due to the contacts of Pastor Augustinus Winkelmann with professors at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , partly for reasons of internal emigration , and church windows, designed the church furnishings , former monastery cells and cemetery graves.

The village square with its redesigned historic agricultural buildings of the former monastery courtyard invites you to shop for exclusive products. Also in the "old dairy ", built in 1927 and remodeled in 2002, there are numerous shops that can be reached via a covered passage . In addition, there is a hotel in the village with conference rooms and an attached restaurant. In 2010, the Marienthal cultural group organized the “Marienthal Winter Evenings” for the 15th time. Readings, music, cabaret and theater performances are presented. The Marienthal summer evenings are also very popular. For the children there are so-called “children's hiking trails” with 15 stations with sights worth seeing from fields , forests and farms to discover. At the beginning of November, the traditionally annual Marienthaler Martinsmarkt attracts numerous guests to visit the around 50 exhibitors, shops and restaurants on the church and village square as well as in the old dairy. Other offers over the course of the year are: "Advent in the village", "Apple joy - apple delight" or "Midsummer market".

Marienthal is also approached by a citizens' bus to establish a connection to the Hamminkeln train station, from which one can get to the larger cities of Wesel and Bocholt.
