Marine transport formations of the Bundeswehr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bundeswehr had to 2002, marine transportation formations for transport tasks of the German Navy on land. A distinction must be made between transport formations of the amphibious group , the naval sector commands or naval divisions and motor vehicle squadrons of the naval aviators.

Amphibious transport forces

In the amphibious group, which was sometimes called the amphibious transport group, there were two amphibious transport and handling battalions in addition to floating landing units.

Naval transport battalions and companies

Initially, two battalions were established in 1964 , to which a third, established from the relevant units of the NVA , was added after reunification in 1991 . In 1998 this was dissolved and two companies and a platoon were built from the remains . With the establishment of the armed forces base , the Navy was able to access its logistical capabilities and thus completely dissolve or surrender its own remaining units in 2002.

The order of the naval transport battalions and companies included:

  • Large-scale supply and crew transports
  • Coastal transshipment
  • Repair
  • Driver training
  • Storage and maintenance of an operating stock of spare parts, materials and consumables.

The naval transport formations were equipped with vehicles of different car and truck classes. There were also various logistical auxiliary vehicles, including cranes and field handling equipment.

Motor vehicle squadrons of the naval aviation squadron

All naval aviation squadrons had a motor vehicle squadron as a transport formation at company level. These vehicle squadrons were subordinate to the respective naval air base group. The Kfz Squadrons had their own driving schools until 1998.

The majority of the non-commissioned officers and crews of the transport associations belonged to the application series 72 (coastal handling service), 73 (vehicle operation) and 74 (vehicle repair). They were initially trained in a naval training battalion , later at the Naval Coast Service School and finally in the driving schools affiliated with the transport formations. From 1998 two training centers for the motor vehicle service were set up in Wilhelmshaven and in the naval training battalion in Glückstadt . After the disbandment of the battalions and their repair companies in 1998, regional service centers were set up in Wilhelmshaven, Seeth and Rostock for repairs .
