Markus Hajek
Markus Hajek (born November 25, 1861 in Werschetz , Austrian Empire ; died April 4, 1941 in London ) was an Austrian physician.
Life
Markusz Hajek was born in the Banat , which from 1867 belonged to the Hungarian half of Austria-Hungary . He came from a Jewish family. He attended high school in Temesvár and studied medicine at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1885. He received his training at the Rudolfstiftung Hospital and at the General Polyclinic with Johann Schnitzler . Hajek married Gisela Schnitzler (1867–1953) in 1889, the daughter of his academic teacher and sister of Arthur Schnitzler . The ascension-conscious, also from Judaism, Johann Schnitzler saw the marriage of his daughter with a Hungarian " Eastern Jew " as a mesalliance .
Hajek completed his habilitation in laryngology in 1897 and became a private lecturer. In 1899 he published the pathology and therapy of inflammatory diseases of the sinuses and the nose . Hajek thus laid the foundation for the development of endonasal surgery. From 1900 to 1918 he was head of department at the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Ambulatorium in Vienna. In 1912 he became an associate. Professor appointed, full professor in 1919. As the successor to Ottokar von Chiari, he headed the Laryngo-Rhinological University Clinic in the General Hospital (AKH) until his retirement in 1933 .
In 1923 Sigmund Freud had Hajek's surgery for his recently discovered palatal cancer; the operation was almost fatal.
Hajek was made an honorary citizen of the city of Vienna in early 1932 . He received a commemorative publication in 1921 and 1931 . After Austria was annexed in 1938, Hajek and his wife emigrated to Great Britain .
