William von Goeben (1818–1902)

William Heinrich Georg Eduard von Goeben , also Wilhelm (Heinrich Georg) von Goeben (born July 30, 1818 in Stade , † April 19, 1902 in Lauenstein (Salzhemmendorf) ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Goeben came from a family belonging to the ancient nobility of the Duchy of Bremen . He was a son of Wilhelm von Goeben (1791–1872) and his wife Johanna, née Kuckuck-Walden (1792–1832). His father had fought with the King's German Legion in Spain , was Major a. D. and director of the widows' fund for the court and civil service in Hanover. William was the younger brother of General of the Infantry August Karl von Goeben .

Military career

Goeben attended high school in Celle and joined the 3rd Line Battalion of the Hanover Army on October 1, 1834 as a cadet . On 1 July 1836 he was awarded the title as a second lieutenant , and on 16 March 1838 he was promoted to second lieutenant in the meantime the regiment was formed Association . As Prime Lieutenant Goeben took part in the battles at Bilschau and Oeversee in 1848 during the campaign against Denmark . In mid-May 1853 he became a captain and at the end of May 1855 he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment as a company commander . On May 22, 1860 Goeben rose to major in the 2nd light battalion and a year later he was given command of the 2nd battalion in the 4th Infantry Regiment, with which he was posted to Bremerhaven to protect the coast during the war against Denmark in 1864 . As a lieutenant colonel and battalion commander in the 6th Infantry Regiment , he took part in the battle of Langensalza in 1866 during the war against Prussia . After the lost war and the annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover , Goeben took his leave on January 3, 1867 .

He then entered the Prussian Army on March 9, 1867 as a lieutenant colonel with a patent from May 23, 1866 . First Goeben was aggregated to the 5th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 53 and on April 11, 1867, was assigned as the commander of the 1st Battalion. After his promotion to colonel , he was given command of the 2nd Posensche Infantry Regiment No. 19 on June 6, 1868 . He led this regiment in 1870/71 in the war against France at the siege of Metz , the battles at Noisseville , Bapaume and Saint-Quentin and in the battles at Chieulles, Rupigny-Malroy, Petit Masle, Woippy and Bellevue. Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he returned home and was appointed commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade in Liegnitz on April 13, 1872, with the position à la suite of his regiment . In the same capacity he took over the 30th Infantry Brigade in Koblenz on February 4, 1873 and advanced to major general on March 22, 1873 . From July 14, 1877, he was employed as a commander in Mainz and on October 18, 1877, he was promoted to lieutenant general . On the occasion of the order festival in 1880, Goeben received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. With the award of the Order of the Crown, First Class, he was put up for disposal on October 11, 1881 with a pension .

After his departure, Kaiser Wilhelm II gave him the character of General of the Infantry on January 19, 1896, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the day of the Battle of Saint-Quentin .

family

He married Auguste von Pusendorf (1815–1888) on December 10, 1848. Several children were born from the marriage.
