Marie Sophie Hingst
Marie Sophie Hingst (born October 20, 1987 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg ; † before or on July 17, 2019 in Dublin ) was a German historian and blogger and most recently worked as a project manager in Ireland .
After Hingst had used a false identity as a Jew and alleged descendant of Holocaust victims on her blog , the news magazine Der Spiegel reported about this and other untruthful statements by Hingst about her alleged social engagement for refugees in June 2019 .
Life
Hingst graduated from high school in Dessau and studied history and East Asian studies in Berlin , Lyon and Los Angeles . She completed her master's degree in Early Modern History at the Free University of Berlin in 2013 and then began her doctoral thesis at the School of History and Humanities at Trinity College Dublin . From August 2018 she worked as a fellow and project manager for Intel Ireland. She also worked as a volunteer with the Irish Red Cross .
In September 2017, Hingst wrote her doctoral thesis entitled One phenomenon, Three perspectives. English colonial strategies in Ireland revisited, 1603–1680 .
In her blog Read on my dear, read on , founded in 2013 , Hingst reported in the form of short stories, among other things, about her allegedly Jewish family, who are said to have lost several ancestors in the Holocaust. She also told stories about her work as a nurse there. From spring 2017, she published daily postcards on social media for the journalists Deniz Yücel , Meşale Tolu, and other prisoners in Turkish prisons , who were imprisoned in Turkey.
In March 2019, DuMont published the illustrated book Kunstgeschichte als Brotbelag, published by Hingst , which contains photos published on Twitter under the hashtag #KunstgeschichteAlsBrotbelag.
Hingst was a long-time member of the support group “ Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe ” in Berlin, of which Lea Rosh is chairman .
Most recently she lived in Dublin.
Detection of counterfeits
End of May 2019 revealed the journalist Martin Doerry whose Jewish grandmother Lilli Jahn in Auschwitz-Birkenau was assassinated, in the mirror after research by a team led by the Berlin historian Gabriele Bergner on that the stories published on Hingsts blog about their supposedly own - supposedly Jewish - Family history and its 22 Holocaust victims were not true. At several panels and conferences she appeared in the dual role of historian and descendant of persecuted Jews. Although she actually came from a Protestant family, she submitted documents to Yad Vashem to prove that members of her family had been victims of the Holocaust. Bergner and Der Spiegel turned to the Stralsund City Archives with a request for information on the alleged Jewish ancestors who were supposed to come from Stralsund. It turned out that only two of these people - their great-grandparents Hermann and Marie Hingst - had lived there and none of them were Jewish. Her grandfather, who is said to have been an Auschwitz prisoner, actually worked as a Protestant pastor. Thereupon the Lord Mayor of Stralsund, Alexander Badrow, informed the Foreign Office about the incident. According to Der Spiegel , Hingst had a lawyer inform that the texts on her blog claim “a considerable amount of artistic freedom”. The case was also reported in foreign media.
In addition, Hingst reported on her blog about the sex education she provided for male Syrian refugees in a doctor's practice in a small German town. In 2007, at the age of 19, she founded a slum clinic in New Delhi and offered the same work there. These stories also turned out to be fabricated.
She published the story about sex education for Syrian refugees in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit under the pseudonym Sophie Roznblatt in 2017 , because she pretended that it was too dangerous for her to use her real name. As part of the Spiegel's research , Zeit Online reviewed this guest article ( The problem with the penis ) in May 2019 . Hingst, who had been asked to comment by the editors, deceived them with “bogus identities, false witnesses and alleged evidence”, including the bogus identity of a deceased person, which was revealed by visiting relatives. The editorial team of Zeit Online therefore came to the conclusion that the events alleged by Hingst in the guest article are "largely incorrect" and removed the article.
In 2017, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung published an interview with Hingst about awareness-raising classes for refugees without mentioning her name. The interview was also put offline "because of well-founded doubts" about the truth of what was described.
The education of refugees had also been reported on several radio stations. Hingst's conversation with Deutschlandfunk Nova has now been removed. The report in the Bayern-2 radio broadcast Zündfunk from May 16, 2017 was already depublished in May 2018 due to the legal guidelines. Bayern 2 announced that it would check the truth of the matter more closely before sending it. The radio station SWR3 , which also reported, admitted that she “appeared very convincing in her emails as well as in conversation” and that an interview with her had therefore come about.
death
On July 17, 2019, Hingst was found dead in her Dublin apartment. The police ruled out third-party negligence as the cause of death. Her mother suspects suicide . Before her death, Hingst had told Derek Scally, a journalist for the Irish Times , that she felt “skinned alive” by the Spiegel report that made her false statements public. Her mother described to Scally that Hingst was haunted by her online reputation. The tenor of the Wikipedia article about her was that Hingst was a blogger and a con man. Scally described that in a three-hour encounter with her in Berlin he had the impression that Hingst had psychological problems. Scally had also planned to report on her false statements, but the Irish Times initially refrained from publishing it, whereupon Scally met with Hingst in Berlin for a conversation. However, the Russian television broadcaster RT had already picked up the Spiegel report and translated it into English. Even the mirror himself translated his original article into English and put it online.
After Hingst's death, Der Spiegel expressed its regret when asked by the Tagesspiegel and announced that, prior to the publication of the report, during a conversation in Dublin she had made “a concentrated, confident and in no way psychologically attacked impression”. One does not want to participate in “a public discussion about the causes and backgrounds of death”. After criticism and allegations of various kinds after the death of Hingst against the interviewing journalist Martin Doerry , he wrote an article in which he clearly defended the motive and the justification of reporting on the false identity of Hingst. He described that he had given Hingst sufficient opportunities for replies and corrections and that the article would not have been published as it was if she had made use of it. A few days later, journalist Deniz Yücel revealed to Die Welt that Doerry had contacted him during his research and sounded "as if he was on the trail of a huge scandal". Yücel accused Doerry that in his article he repeatedly "adapted facts about Hingst to his story with a few tricks" and thus "inserted them into his image of the unscrupulous impostor and shameless self-promoter".
Other media reported in detail on the events that led to Hingst's death, and in some cases also addressed the urge to be Jewish victims or to be related to victims of the Holocaust, which has become known as Wilkomirski syndrome.
Prices
At the beginning of 2018, Hingst was voted “Blogger of the Year 2017” by the “Golden Bloggers” via online voting . In 2018 she received one of the six prizes of the Future of Europe project for the essay Europeans should non abandon a collective identity by the Financial Times .
Due to the pretense of authenticity of a fictional family story - which readers had to assume was their own family history - Hingst was stripped of the “Blogger of the Year 2017” award from the “Golden Bloggers” in June 2019.
