Markus Schwaiger

Markus Carl Schwaiger (born April 3, 1950 in Munich ) is a German nuclear medicine specialist and university professor.

Life

Markus Schwaiger studied medicine at the Free University of Berlin from 1969 to 1972 , then for a year at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg and then again in Berlin until he passed his medical state examination in 1975. He then worked in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Klinikum rechts der Isar , the Andino Hospital in Coina, Peru, and the German Heart Center . In 1978 he became a research assistant for physiology and cardiology at the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and the following year he became an assistant doctor at the German Heart Center.

From 1981 Schwaiger completed a specialist training at UCLA in Los Angeles , where he was initially an assistant doctor in nuclear medicine and cardiology until he became a senior physician. In 1987 he moved to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as a lecturer in nuclear medicine . From 1987 he was director of cardiovascular nuclear medicine there. In 1991 he became a professor of medicine. That same year he became an honorary member of the University of Michigan Chapter's Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society .

In 1993 Schwaiger was offered the chair for nuclear medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which he held until December 31, 2017. In this function he was director of the nuclear medicine clinic at Klinikum rechts der Isar . In 1999 he became dean of studies, 2002 vice dean and 2002 dean of the Faculty of Medicine at TUM. From 1998 to 2002 he was also Scientific Director of the Institute for Radiology at the German Heart Center in Munich. He has been the medical director of the entire clinic since 2017 and full-time since January 1, 2018.

Markus Schwaiger is the author of over 600 original publications and more than 100 book chapters.

research

Markus Schwaiger's research focuses on imaging procedures in cardiology and oncology as well as the methodical development of scintigraphic techniques. His more recent research deals, among other things, with the application of imaging to examine metabolism , blood flow and innervation .

The Bavarian Academy of Sciences described Schwaiger's work on the application of positron emission tomography (PET) as groundbreaking. He made a major contribution to PET becoming the international standard procedure.
