Political activities

The trained saleswoman Marlies Krämer is interested and committed to feminist issues. In particular, equal treatment of men and women in language is a concern that she emphatically defends.

When her passport had to be extended in the 1990s, Krämer was bothered by the fact that only the phrase “holder” was given for the signature. She went to court and managed to have the phrase "owner" used since 1996.

In 1998 she initiated the renaming of the previously common practice in Germany of only labeling low pressure areas with women's names, and since 1999 the low pressure areas have been given female first names, alternating one year and male the following year.

In February and March 2018, numerous national media reported on Krämer's proceedings before the Federal Court of Justice (Az. VI ZR 143/17, March 13, 2018), with which they wanted to achieve that the Sparkasse, in addition to the generic masculine word such as "account holder" or "recipient "Also uses" account holder "or" recipient ", in particular she wants to be addressed as" customer "instead of the masculine word form" customer ". She was defeated in court. The President of the German Association of Women Lawyers , Maria Wersig , regretted the decision of the BGH and said that much remained to be done in terms of gender-sensitive language . Krämer announced that he would go to the Federal Constitutional Court and, if necessary, to the European Court of Justice . In July 2020, the Federal Constitutional Court dismissed the lawsuit due to a lack of reasons for the application.
