Marquis de Sade (Original title: Marquis ) is a satirical comedy by Roland Topor and Henri Xhonneux from 1989. Inspired by the life of Marquis de Sade and his writings, the film, in which all actors wear animal masks, takes place at the time of the French Revolution .

action

In the year of the French Revolution, Libertine Marquis de Sade sits in the Bastille because of the desecration of a crucifix . While he fends off the advances of the homosexual guard Ambert, Marquis uses the time of his imprisonment to write his mostly pornographic writings. He then has this presented to him by his oversized genitals named Colin, who, in a dialogue with de Sade, criticizes above all the use of too many verbs and otherwise likes to philosophize about politics and (sexual) freedom. Meanwhile, conspiracies, intrigues and the revolution are planned in the Bastille. For example, the priest wants to induce the marquis to sleep with his pregnant fellow prisoner Justine so that the unborn child can be ascribed to him, who was conceived during the rape of Justine by the king. At the same time, the revolutionaries Lupine (the former police chief) and Pigonou try to break out of the Bastille with the help of their allies, the dominant Juliette, in order to start the revolution.

background

The fictional story is thematically based on the work and life of the Marquis de Sade . Above all, it stands out for its staging. The director Henri Xhonneux and above all Roland Topor, who is responsible for the script and the artistic direction, use different creative means to stage the story:

  • The most obvious stylistic devices are elaborate animal masks, which the actors wear over their heads. As a result, only a few facial expressions can be seen on the faces, instead gestures and the dialogues between the protagonists are emphasized.
  • Individual scenes also contain modeling clay animation . This - and the portrayal of the protagonists as animals using masks - leads to comparisons with Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles at various points , which are, however, misleading because real actors are in the costumes and Marquis is not an animated film in the strict sense.
  • Marquis de Sade is not the first collaboration between Henri Xhonneux and Roland Topor: The successfully jointly produced television program Die Sendung mit der Katzen (French title: Téléchat ) ran from 1983 to 2002 (three seasons) on French television, on German television within the show "Fun on Tuesday" from 1988 (only the first season).
  • Another personal overlap between the two formats can be found with the speaker Valérie Kling . At Marquis she speaks the voice of Colin, in Téléchat she is responsible for the characters Mic Mac, Sophie la cuillère and Raymonde la fourchette.
  • Arte dedicated a bonus feature to the film with the title The Divine Marquis - Three Approaches to Roland Topor's "Marquis" with background information on the real person of the Marquis and the making of the film in the Trash category .
  • The film premiered in France on April 26, 1989, in the USA on July 3, 1991.

Reviews

“Despite some shoddy and drastic elements, the film is built entirely on the interaction of the dry polemical dialogues between de Sade and Colin, the hearty political satire and the feverish sexual horror visions of the writer. In this detour, the Marquis actually succeeds in approaching the spirit of the original. This is an astonishing achievement given the radical nature of the literary and historical sources. "

"CONCLUSION:" Marquis "is by far one of the most extraordinary films that one has ever seen. [...] And so one can say without any exaggeration that this is a visually intoxicating piece of film, in which every lover of the unique should be delighted. 8.5 / 10 "

“CONCLUSION: If you are looking for beauty in the off-the-wall, you can quickly put this grotesque gem from a surrealistic puppet film on your shelf. [...] RATING: 8 out of 10 lobsters (with mayonnaise!) "

- filmtipps.at

“This film is wonderful! The obscene humor never moves on a flat regular table level, there are far too many gags in the delicious dialogue joke area. The dog's dry conversations with his penis never seem repulsively vulgar, but are always amusing and amusing because of the high quality of the dialog. [...] A grotesque, obscene, wild, vulgar, surrealistic dream of black humor with a muppet as the main character, the speaks to her phallus . What more do you want? "
