Marshall is a small town and the administrative seat of Clark County in the eastern part of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000, Marshall had 3,771 residents.
About 4 km southwest of Marshall is Lincoln Trail State Park , which is used as a recreation area.

US Highway 40 , which runs in a southwest-northeast direction and crosses Illinois State Route 1 in the city center, runs through the city . Interstate 70 runs parallel to Highway 40 about 2 km north of the city .
Via Terre Haute , 17 miles away , it is 142 miles northeast to Indianapolis , the capital of Indiana. Chicago is 296 km to the north, Illinois' capital Springfield 198 km to the west-northwest, St. Louis , Missouri 253 km to the southwest and Kentucky's largest city, Louisville 277 km to the south.
history
Marshall was created in 1835 by William B. Archer . The place is named after the former Secretary of State John Marshall . In 1863, during the Civil War , Marshall was the scene of clashes between the government and the so-called Copperheads . In March 1863 a unit of the Indiana Union Army arrested some deserters. A local judge then ordered the deserters to be released immediately and arrested two army sergeants for kidnapping. As a result, 250 soldiers were summoned from Indianapolis under the command of Colonel Henry B. Carrington . The courthouse was occupied, the sergeants released and those responsible arrested.
Marshall was home to the Handy Writers' Colony , founded in 1950 , which included bestselling author James Jones . He built a house in Marshall and lived here from 1952 to 1957.
Demographic data
In the 2000 census, the population was 3,771. These were distributed over 1,655 households in 1,002 families. The population density was 463.7 / km². There were 1,832 buildings, which corresponds to a building density of 225.3 / km².
The population in 2000 was 98.33% white , 0.29% African American , 0.13% American Indian , 0.16% Asian and 0.24% other. 0.85% said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.48% of the population were Hispanics from any of the above groups.
23.7% were under 18 years of age, 8.0% between 18 and 24, 26.7% between 25 and 44, 19.8% between 45 and 64 and 21.9% 65 and older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 84.4 men, and 80.9 among the over 18 year olds.
The median income per household was $ 33,413 and the median family income was $ 42,909. The average income for men was $ 31,108 and that of women was $ 21,144. The per capita income was $ 19,851. Around 3.6% of families and 6.2% of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
