Martin David Crowe , MBE (born September 22, 1962 in Henderson , New Zealand , † March 3, 2016 in Auckland , New Zealand) was a New Zealand cricketer , commentator and author. He was the 1985 Wisden Cricketer of the Year and was considered one of the best batsmen in the world in his youth. He was right-handed and played for the New Zealand national cricket team from the early 1980s to 1996 . In the early days of his career he was a medium pace bowler. He was the captain of the national team in the early 1990s and brought many innovations in the process such as spin bowler as the first bowler.

Athletic career

His father, Dave Crowe, and his mother played cricket. His brother Jeff Crowe was also used as a cricket captain for New Zealand. He was a cousin of actor Russell Crowe .

Crowe has played for four national cricket teams : the Auckland cricket team , the Central Districts cricket team , Somerset County Cricket Club (England) and the Wellington cricket team . He achieved nearly 20,000 runs and 71 results from at least 100 runs in first-class cricket . His average of 56.02 runs is one of the highest in first-class cricket.

Crowe played 77 Test cricket games with an average of 45.65 as a batsman. These included 17 results over 100 and 18 over 50. He also played 143 One Day International cricket matches averaging 38.55 with four results over 100 and 34 over 50. In 1991, his partnership with Andrew Jones scored 467 runs, a record in the Test Cricket at this point. Crowe was eliminated on 299 runs, the best result for a New Zealander in Test cricket, until Brendon McCullum hit 300 runs in 2014.

He scored the most runs in the 1992 Cricket World Cup .

In the 1992 New Year Honors List, Crowe was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services in cricket. On February 28, 2015, Crowe was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

Time after his active career

After the end of his active career, Crowe developed a variant of the game called Cricket Max . He worked as a television commentator and analyst. He was on the board of directors of South Sydney Rabbitohs Rugby League Football Club. He was the CEO of the Royal Challengers Bangalore , a team in the Indian Premier League . The owner of the team Vijay Mallya was not satisfied with the team's performance and is said to have blamed Crowe and the rest of the management for it.

Return as a player

On May 19, 2011, Crowe announced that he would like to improve his fitness by working to get back to first class cricket. He said he was only three games short of 250 games and 392 short of 20,000 runs.

Crowe played on a reserve team at the same club that his father had played for when he was 49.

Life

From 1991 to 1996 Crowe was married to Simone Curtice for the first time. He had an illegitimate daughter from a relationship with Suzanne Taylor. Since 2009, Crowe was married to Lorraine Downes, a former Miss Universe , a second marriage .

illness

On October 15, 2012, it was announced that Crowe had malignant lymphoma . On June 5, 2013, he announced that he was cured of cancer but would say goodbye to cricket.

In 2014, Crowe announced that the disease had broken out again and that his chances of survival were less than 5% for more than twelve months. He died as a result of his illness in Auckland on March 3, 2016.
